Sr. Java Software Engineer

Description We are looking for a senior-level software engineer to join a contract opportunity with potential for a permanent role, supporting life insurance technology initiatives in West Des Moines, Iowa. This role will guide technical direction across policy administration and connected enterprise platforms, helping deliver resilient, secure, and scalable solutions that support both customer and operational needs. The ideal candidate brings deep Java engineering expertise, strong integration experience, and the ability to influence architecture, delivery, and modernization efforts in a complex distributed environment.

Responsibilities:

• Provide technical leadership for solution design and implementation across policy administration applications and interconnected enterprise systems.

• Build and enhance software components using Java, Spring Boot, Angular, TypeScript, and integration technologies to support business-critical insurance capabilities.

• Drive end-to-end architecture decisions by assessing dependencies, integration points, and system impacts across upstream and downstream platforms.

• Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver APIs, data flows, and middleware integrations that connect customer-facing tools, operational systems, and reporting environments.

• Lead design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions to promote maintainable engineering standards and sound architectural choices.

• Support deployment and delivery practices through CI/CD pipelines, containerized applications, Kubernetes, and modern DevSecOps approaches.

• Investigate and resolve complex production issues spanning applications, APIs, databases, middleware, and enterprise support systems.

• Recommend solution placement across application, integration, and data layers to ensure capabilities are implemented in the most effective technology domain.

• Contribute to technical roadmaps, modernization planning, and engineering improvements that strengthen long-term platform performance and scalability. Requirements • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, enterprise application development, solution architecture, or senior technical leadership roles.

• Strong hands-on experience with Java, Core Java, Spring Boot, Angular, JavaScript or TypeScript, and enterprise integration development.

• Proven background delivering solutions across policy administration platforms, APIs, middleware, data ecosystems, and customer-facing applications.

• Experience working with insurance policy administration systems or similar platforms within regulated enterprise environments.

• Solid understanding of distributed system integration, service orchestration, messaging, event-driven patterns, and cross-platform interoperability.

• Experience with Kubernetes, GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern software delivery practices.

• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across multiple systems and lead teams through design and implementation decisions.

• Preferred: experience in life insurance or financial services, along with exposure to MuleSoft, ETL processes, Kafka, Snowflake, reporting ecosystems, or mainframe-integrated environments. Technology Doesn't Change the World, People Do.®
