Quantum Formatics is seeking an Undergraduate Research Intern (Experimental) to assist with the operation of our core laboratory

About Quantum Formatics Quantum Formatics is a materials discovery startup building next-generation superconductors for high-field applications, from more accessible MRI technology to scalable fusion energy. Based at The Engine in Cambridge, MA, we are a small, focused team of scientists and engineers operating at the intersection of materials science, AI, and applied physics. We are in a strong financial position with committed institutional backing and are scaling our R&D team to accelerate the pace of discovery.

Description This role is for the Spring 2027 Cycle

What we are looking for Quantum Formatics is seeking an Undergraduate Research Intern (Experimental) to assist with the operation of our core laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This hands-on role is ideal for a highly motivated individual interested in superconducting alloy synthesis and characterization, as well as gaining experience in a fast-paced startup environment. You will play a key role in synthesis and characterization efforts within our high-throughput materials discovery laboratory, contributing to the exploration of novel materials while developing strong research and professional skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with synthesis of bulk alloys and intermetallic materials via arc melting.
  • Operate instrumentation for structural, chemical, magnetic, and electrical characterization.
  • Collaborate closely with the research scientists to improve synthesis and characterization throughput.
  • Follow safety standards, lab workflows, and operational best practices.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing undergraduate degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Completed at least two years of undergraduate coursework
  • Experience with at least one of the following materials characterization techniques: XRD, SEM/EDS, magnetometry, or low-temperature resistivity measurements.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment working alongside scientists with diverse backgrounds and domain expertise.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Salary $18 - $25 per hour
