This position is located at Central Office in St. Paul, Minnesota and may have the flexibility to work a hybrid schedule or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor. The incumbent will be expected to work in the office as determined by policy and discussion with their supervisor.

As a Regional Engineer in MnDOT’s Office of Aeronautics, you will provide direction and leadership in planning, programming, and administering state and federal grant-in-aid programs for approximately 45 public airports to ensure a safe and viable air transportation system is developed, maintained, and promoted. You will work closely with two other regional teams and provide programmatic oversight and policy guidance for statewide initiatives such as environmental reviews, coordination, and compliance. This position will occasionally travel in a small aircraft to meet with customer groups. This position requires travel within Minnesota approximately 20% of the time.

Some responsibilities include:

  • Determining eligibility of airport projects for federal or state funding and ensuring project justifications are complete and environmental requirements are met.

  • Reviewing reimbursement requests and project documents for airport projects for compliance with applicable standards and requirements.

  • Providing technical advice to cities, counties, and airport authorities to support comprehensive airport development.

  • Meeting with airport owners and consultants in the assigned region to collect and maintain a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for the State Airport System.

  • Reviewing and providing comments on Airport Master Plans (MP), associated Airport Layout Plans (ALP), construction safety plans, construction project designs, and other engineering documents to ensure final plans meet expectations, timelines, and standards.

  • Providing content expertise, materials, and guest speaker services for educational outreach at events such as AirTAP workshops, the Annual Airports Conference, EAA AirVenture, FAA workshops, and others.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensure as a professional engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID).

  • Experience in applying engineering principles, practices, techniques and methods.

  • Experience managing transportation projects.

  • Experience in contract administration, including managing grant agreements and ensuring compliance with funding policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and understanding of the aviation industry, including airport operations, and the roles and responsibilities of partners and stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of airport project planning, programming, design, funding, and delivery processes.

  • Experience applying environmental laws, regulations, and policies as they relate to transportation infrastructure development.
