Full job description

At BETA Technologies, we apply our intellectual curiosity, passion for aviation, and commitment to sustainability toward a shared mission of revolutionizing electric aviation. Regardless of the position one holds, each team member brings their talent and desire to positively impact the environment and lives of others in a refreshing, vibrant, and inclusive culture.

The Lead Telemetry System Engineer owns the design, integration, release, and lifecycle of BETA’s aircraft telemetry and flight-test data-collection systems. This person leads the hardware and system architecture installed on the aircraft, connecting onboard instrumentation and data acquisition with communications links, onboard computing, ground stations, data display, and post-flight analysis tools. They will turn an existing, working set of in-house hardware, system diagrams, configurations, and test infrastructure into a scalable, documented, validated, and officially released system. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an engineer who can bridge aircraft hardware design, systems engineering, flight test, software, networking, and compliance. It includes both scrappy R&D work for early concept aircraft and detailed design and documentation for certification flight test.

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Lead the architecture, design, integration, and release of aircraft telemetry and flight-test data-collection systems.

  • Own the aircraft-installed hardware, including instrumentation interfaces, power, wiring and harnessing, connectors, onboard computing, communications, and aircraft integration.

  • Develop controlled system documentation, requirements, interface definitions, installation instructions, and configuration baselines from existing designs and working systems.

  • Lead verification, validation, qualification, and release activities for test equipment and supporting software in accordance with BETA development and assurance processes.

  • Partner with Flight Test, Certification, Software, Systems Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Program Management to deliver reliable, repeatable telemetry capability.

  • Support aircraft installation, ground checkout, flight-test operations, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of the system.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent hands-on work experience.

  • 4+ years of experience in aircraft systems, telemetry, instrumentation, data acquisition, avionics, embedded systems, RF communications, test systems, or comparable complex hardware environments.

  • Experience integrating electrical hardware, sensors, data interfaces, networking, and computing systems into a complete product or test system.

  • Experience creating technical documentation such as system architectures, requirements, interface documents, design documentation, or test plans.

  • Familiarity with Linux-based systems, Ethernet/IP networking, and distributed hardware/software systems.

Above and Beyond Qualifications:

  • Experience with aircraft flight-test telemetry, instrumentation, airborne data acquisition, ground stations, or RF communications systems.

  • Experience with in-house data-acquisition hardware, Starlink, Silvus radios, IADS, Grafana, CAN, Ethernet, or high-rate data-recording systems.

  • Experience with aircraft electrical installations, installation drawings, harness design, and environmental qualification.

  • Familiarity with aerospace development, verification, validation, configuration management, and certification-oriented processes.

  • Experience with Polarion, 3DX/Teamcenter, GitLab, Jira, or similar engineering lifecycle tools.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work location is on-site in South Burlington, Vermont

  • Candidate must be a US Citizen

  • This position will include occasional work around aircraft and the production line to support integration, troubleshooting, testing, and design validation.
