About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the role

As a Communications Manager at Anthropic, you will bring The Anthropic Institute's research to the world. The Institute works to advance the public conversation around AI, publishing findings so that policymakers, researchers, journalists, and the public can reckon with what's here and prepare for what's ahead.

You will provide dedicated communications coverage for the Institute's two largest and fastest growing research engines: 1) Economic Research, which tracks AI's effect on jobs, wages, and the broader economy through the Anthropic Economic Index and labor market analysis, and 2) Societal Impacts, which studies how Claude is actually used, from workplace impacts and personal guidance to Claude's values and frontier agent use. You’ll also support TAI’s other teams, including Special Projects and the Frontier Red Team.

In this role, you'll drive research tracking, publication strategy, and reactive press across both portfolios, including launches like quarterly Economic Index releases and the rollout of the new Economic Research Fund. You'll partner closely with the Economic Research and Societal Impacts research teams day to day, work alongside the Deputy Communications Lead, and coordinate with Anthropic's broader communications, policy, and editorial teams to keep messaging aligned while maintaining the Institute's distinct voice.

Responsibilities

  • Drive day-to-day communications for the Economic Research and Societal Impacts teams, including research tracking, publication planning, and reactive press

  • Lead communications planning and launch execution for the Anthropic Economic Index, recurring labor market analyses, and new research initiatives like the Economic Research Fund

  • Develop narratives that translate technical and quantitative research for audiences well beyond specialist communities

  • Build and maintain relationships with reporters across economics, labor, technology, research, and general interest outlets, along with academic economists and think tank researchers

  • Draft communications plans, briefing documents, talking points, press materials, and social content

  • Manage reactive press on sensitive findings in partnership with the Communications Lead, Deputy Communications Lead, and policy team

  • Partner with policy and editorial teams on publishing strategy, ensuring research reaches the largest appropriate audience through the Anthropic blog, the Institute's site, microsites, interactive experiences, video, and audio

  • Present researchers for media interviews, podcast appearances, and speaking engagements, and prepare them to succeed in those moments

  • Partner with Institute communications leadership on major announcements and milestone engagements

  • Build repeatable rollout playbooks and processes that allow a lean team to cover a growing research portfolio

  • Track both teams' research agendas to shape findings early and plan publications months in advance

You may be a good fit if you

  • Have deep communications experience, with significant depth in research, science, economics, or policy communications

  • Have a track record of translating complex, technical, or academic research into public narratives that reach audiences well beyond specialist communities

  • Are comfortable reading and interrogating quantitative research, and can engage substantively and credibly with the researchers who produce it

  • Have strong, active media relationships

  • Can move between long-lead strategic messaging and fast-turnaround tactical execution without losing quality, from planning a launch months out to handling an inbound press inquiry the same day

  • Have led multi-channel rollouts spanning strategy, digital, press, and cross-functional approvals

  • Are intellectually curious about AI's impact on the economy, society, and the future of work, and can embrace the unexpected in a field where the unusual is the norm

  • Thrive in fast-moving environments where priorities shift and ambiguity is common

  • Are excited about Anthropic's mission to develop AI that is safe and beneficial

Strong candidates may also have

  • Experience at a research institution, think tank, economics publication, or policy organization communicating quantitative findings

  • Familiarity with the AI policy landscape and the debates around AI's labor market and societal impacts

  • Experience standing up communications processes or playbooks on a small, growing team

  • A background working directly with economists, social scientists, or academic researchers on publication strategy

  • Experience managing sensitive or high-scrutiny press moments, including deciding what to say, when, and how

  • Enthusiasm for using AI tools in your own workflows to multiply what a small team can do

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

Come work with us!

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
