2027 Process Metallurgist Internship ATI Specialty Materials

Location: Monroe, NC Billet Conditioning

Program Duration: 10 Weeks | Summer 2027

Target Students: Rising Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors Materials Science & Engineering

Turn Metallurgy Into Manufacturing Impact Intern in Process Metallurgy at ATI

At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a Process Metallurgist Intern, youll gain hands-on experience applying fundamental metallurgy to real-world manufacturing processes. Youll work alongside experienced metallurgists and operations teams to analyze process data, evaluate microstructural changes, identify improvement opportunities, and support process optimization across Monroes Press, Radial Forge, and Conditioning operations.

What Youll Work On

Depending on your project assignment, you may:

  • Analyze titanium hot working processes by correlating changes such as reduced furnace soak times and modified reduction schedules with microstructural changes and their impact on product testing and RFT.

  • Perform process audits of standardized tasks within the Monroe Press, Radial Forge, and Conditioning areas to evaluate operator execution, process compliance, and opportunities for improvement.

  • Analyze Radial Forge output and process data to identify reduction schedules associated with excessive forging forces

  • Apply metallurgical knowledge and data analysis to support process optimization and manufacturing improvements across nickel, titanium, and specialty steel alloy groups .

  • Prepare and present project findings and recommendations to peers and leadership.
