Tenured/Tenure-Track: Open Rank & Title College of Architecture

Location College Station, TX

Open Date 10/7/2026

Position ID 193349

Description

The College of Architecture at Texas A&M University invites applications for 3 full-time tenured/tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in AI-Powered Planning, Design, and Construction (AI-PDC) with 9-month academic appointments to begin in Fall 2027. Each selected candidate's home department will be determined based on their expertise, preference, and departmental/college priorities. The College has three departments, including Architecture, Construction Science, Landscape Architecture & Urban Planning.

These faculty cluster hires, together with existing faculty, will lead Texas A&M University’s College of Architecture to become the world's leading land-grant college for AI in the built environment, advancing the responsible development and application of AI to plan, design, build, and sustain communities that are safe, healthy, prosperous, and environmentally responsible.

Through interdisciplinary research, professional education, and public engagement, we will shape how AI transforms the professions of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, land development, and construction. Our work will ensure that AI serves people and communities by enhancing human creativity, improving decision-making, expanding access to opportunities, strengthening infrastructure and housing systems, advancing environmental stewardship, and preparing the next generation of built environment leaders. Drawing on Texas A&M's land-grant mission, we will develop AI solutions that address real-world challenges facing communities, industries, and governments, while critically examining the societal, ethical, environmental, and economic impacts of AI itself.

The ideal candidates will have backgrounds in the disciplines represented in the College, as well as advanced knowledge of AI technologies and its applications in research, teaching, service, and/or practice across the planning, design, and construction disciplines. We are seeking candidates who bring innovative, interdisciplinary, and critical ideas and approaches to strategically grow the College’s position as a global leader in AI research, creative work, and education related to the built environment.

For this search, AI is broadly understood to include machine learning, generative AI, agentic systems, multimodal AI, and related approaches. These approaches may draw on text, imagery, spatial data, building information modeling (BIM), simulation, digital twins, and other sources of data and knowledge.

We welcome research that develops AI methods, advances their applications, or critically examines their implications for the built and natural environments. Potential areas of specialization are listed below. Candidates are expected to specialize in one or more areas; expertise across all areas is neither required nor expected.

  • AI for Planning, Design, and Construction Decision Support: Development of methodologies and applications of AI to spatial analysis, forecasting, scenario development, visualization across the planning, design, and construction processes.

  • AI for Sustainable, Resilient, and Healthy Communities: Use of AI to support climate adaptation, hazard mitigation, housing, infrastructure, environmental stewardship, resource management, and community well-being.

  • Human-Centered, Ethical, and Equitable AI: Research on governance, policy, professional practice, public engagement, transparency, ethics, equity, trust, and the societal implications of AI.

  • Intelligent Buildings, Infrastructure, and Construction Systems: AI-enabled research in structural and architectural engineering, advanced construction materials, infrastructure and construction management, robotics and automation, sensing and monitoring, safety, building energy and performance, resilience, and lifecycle management.

  • AI for the Environment and Resource Systems: Research on the environmental footprint of AI, including data centers, energy demand, water use, land use, carbon impacts, and strategies to enhance sustainability and resilience.

  • Education, Workforce Development, and the Future of Professional Practice: Applications of AI in education, professional training, workforce development, and the evolving roles of built environment professionals.

Successful candidates will be expected to build a visible research program around AI, work across disciplines both within and outside the College, teach AI-related courses, advise graduate students, develop new curriculum related to AI, serve as thought leaders on AI’s impacts on the built environment, and help shape the College’s strategic identity as it relates to AI.
