Your Impact at SAM

The Survey Platting Phase Manager provides day-to-day leadership and technical oversight for the team responsible for platting and related drafting deliverables. Working under the direction of a Survey Project Manager, this role coordinates staffing and assignments, monitors schedules and deliverables, supports project controls, and maintains quality standards for plats and associated survey documents. The position also serves as a technical resource for staff, supports client and agency coordination, and elevates key project concerns and decision points to the Project Manager.

  • Plan, organize, and direct the daily activities of platting and drafting staff supporting assigned land survey projects.

  • Execute work plans and establish staffing and task assignments to meet project milestones, deliverables, and client deadlines.

  • Perform and oversee quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) of plats, platting data, calculations, supporting documents, and related deliverables before submission to the Dept. Manager, Licensed Surveyor, client, or municipalities.

  • Review platting submittals for completeness, accuracy, regulatory compliance, and consistency with SAM quality standards and client specifications.

  • Train, coach, mentor, and develop technical staff; provide clear direction regarding scope, assignments, deliverables, and performance expectations.

  • Participate in employee selection, onboarding, training, performance appraisal, and other staff-management activities as assigned.

  • Monitor workload, productivity, resource utilization, and schedule performance; communicate risks, staffing needs, and potential delays to the Dept Manager.

  • Support project controls by maintaining project management entries, tracking deliverables, and assisting with project status reporting.

  • Manage and perform billing review for the platting department, including reviewing project billing information for accuracy, monitoring scope and budget status, and coordinating with Dept. Manager and Project Managers as needed to address billing-related issues.

  • Participate in planning and implement procedures, standards, and systems that improve operating efficiency, consistency, and quality.

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for platting workflows and submit proposed procedures or revisions for management review and approval.

  • Attend planning commission, municipal, client, or other project meetings as needed.

  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with clients, reviewing agencies, contractors, consultants, and internal SAM teams; communicate project information as authorized by the Dept. Manager.

  • Coordinate with IT and other internal support groups to resolve software, hardware, workflow, or production issues affecting the platting team.

  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, local, and jurisdictional requirements affecting land surveying, subdivision plats, easements, rights-of-way, and recording/submittal processes.

  • Use and support applicable CAD, survey processing, document management, and project tracking software used by SAM.

  • Complete assigned training, independent study, and continuing education to maintain and expand technical and leadership proficiency.

  • Provide support to other operational units as needed and perform other tasks as assigned to help accomplish the Company’s strategic goals.

What You Bring to SAM

  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in land surveying, platting, drafting, or a related technical survey discipline, including experience leading or coordinating technical staff.

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in surveying, geomatics, engineering, drafting/design, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of plat preparation, boundary and subdivision survey documentation, easements, rights-of-way, and applicable jurisdictional platting requirements.

  • Strong proficiency with CAD and survey-related software; experience with tools such as AutoCAD/Civil 3D, MS Office Suite, and project tracking/accounting software is preferred.

  • Ability to plan and prioritize multiple assignments, define deliverables clearly, and meet aggressive deadlines while maintaining quality, teamwork, and collaboration.
