Full job description

Remote Cultural Resources Technical Writer – Archaeology

Location: Fully remote

Duration: Anticipated 2–3 years

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Cultural Resources Technical Writer with a strong background in applied archaeology for a long-term, fully remote assignment. This role will focus on preparing clear, thorough archaeological reports for large-scale surveys and infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on archaeological project experience and sound professional judgment in evaluating sites, assessing archaeological integrity, and developing management recommendations. This position requires an archaeology background; architectural history experience alone does not meet the requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, edit, and finalize archaeological technical reports and other standard cultural resources documentation.

  • Evaluate archaeological sites for eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places, including assessing site significance and integrity.

  • Assess project effects on archaeological resources and develop appropriate management recommendations.

  • Interpret and synthesize field findings, site records, GIS data, and background research into clear, well-supported reports.

  • Support documentation for large-scale surveys and projects involving numerous archaeological resources.

  • Prepare reports for linear infrastructure projects, including roads, pipelines, utilities, and transmission lines.

  • Use ArcGIS Pro to review spatial data, support resource analysis, and prepare or coordinate report maps and figures.

  • Coordinate with project teams to address technical comments and maintain accuracy and consistency across deliverables.

Required Qualifications

  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards in Archaeology.

  • Strong applied archaeological experience, including using archaeological knowledge to evaluate resources and support project decisions.

  • Demonstrated experience evaluating archaeological sites for the National Register of Historic Places, assessing project effects, and making management recommendations.

  • A solid understanding of archaeological integrity and its role in site evaluation.

  • Strong technical writing and editing skills, with experience preparing standard cultural resources reports.

  • Experience supporting large-scale archaeological surveys and projects involving many resources.

  • Archaeological project experience in the Great Plains or comparable western regions.

  • Experience with linear infrastructure projects, such as roads, pipelines, utilities, or transmission lines.

  • Practical experience using ArcGIS Pro in support of archaeological analysis and reporting.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently in a fully remote environment.

Candidates must demonstrate substantive archaeological analysis and reporting experience. GIS proficiency, historic context development, or document review experience alone will not satisfy the requirements.
