JOB DESCRIPTION

BHE GT&S has an exciting opportunity as a Technical Specialist 1 - Electrical, Technical Specialist 2 - Electrical or Sr. Technical Specialist - Electrical at our Leesburg Station in Leesburg, VA or our Pleasant Valley Station in Centreville, VA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Electrical Technical Specialist provides technical expertise for the maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and reliability of electrical power distribution, protection, control, and automation systems used in pipeline and compression facilities. This position supports safe and reliable operation of substations, station electrical equipment, protective relays, reciprocating and centrifugal compressors, gearboxes, SCADA systems, and associated controls.

  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and repair electrical distribution, protection, and control systems, including replacement and configuration of component parts.

  • Perform comprehensive testing on electrical equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, relays, batteries, chargers, and associated station equipment (e.g., power factor testing, turns ratio testing, megger tests) and all analytical tests required to ensure reliable operation.

  • Operate substation and station equipment, including switching and grounding activities.

  • Work with Engineering to manage relay settings, passwords, Management of Change processes, and system adjustments.

  • Maintain, support and test solid-state and microprocessor-based relays, metering, recorders (sequential event, digital fault), SCADA systems and control equipment.

  • Review, implement, and maintain relay settings and electrical system configurations in coordination with Engineering.

  • Support maintenance and calibration of associated station equipment such as generators, motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), circuit breakers, AC inverters, DC chargers, batteries, HVAC systems, and instrumentation.

  • Recommend and monitor preventive maintenance software and systems, assist with preventive maintenance programs and reliability initiatives for electric and compression equipment.

  • Perform site inspections, walk-downs, and maintain accurate drawings and configuration control documentation.

  • Provide technical support during equipment failures, outages, and emergency response situations.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety rules and protocols, including NFPA 70 (National Electric Code), NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace), and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

  • Provide guidance and training to less experienced technicians and operators as needed.

  • May work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions.

  • Be responsible for tools, test equipment, and vehicles.

  • Experience with synchronous motor systems.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in engineering, technology or related field; or equivalent work experience. (Typically, four years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree).

Job level determined by years of experience ;

  • Electrical Technical Specialist 1 – Zero to two years of relevant experience.

  • Electrical Technical Specialist 2 – Minimum three years of relevant experience.

  • Senior Electrical Technical Specialist – Minimum five years of relevant experience.

  • Strong knowledge of industrial electrical, control and automation systems, including power generation and large industrial plant environments. Experience with protective relays, SCADA systems, power distribution equipment, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, control systems, and related testing and diagnostic equipment. Experience with GE, SEL, and Beckwith relays is preferred.

  • Understanding of plant operations, utilities, compressor systems, environmental regulations, and industrial safety requirements, including electrical hazards, arc flash, confined spaces, and rotating equipment. Experience supporting reciprocating and centrifugal compression equipment is preferred, along with the ability to quickly learn and support compression systems.

  • Demonstrated analytical, troubleshooting and technical communication skills, with the ability to diagnose complex problems, interpret and update electrical drawings and schematics, prepare technical documentation, and effectively communicate with technical and operational teams.

  • Strong organizational, collaboration, and field support skills, including the ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage responsibilities in a fast-paced environment, utilize Microsoft Office and maintenance management systems, and perform field work in varying conditions, including climbing, lifting, and working in confined spaces.
