Casual General Theater Technician

About the Role

Singapore American School (SAS) is seeking Casual Theatre Technicians to support the Theatre Department during busy periods, simultaneous events, and staff leave.

SAS presents a wide variety of Performing Arts events throughout the year, including Dance, Music, Drama and Musical Theatre, across a range of professional performance spaces:

• Auditorium: 840-seat proscenium theatre equipped with a Constellation electroacoustic sound system

• Drama Theatre: 307-seat Greek amphitheatre-style theatre

• Theatre Studio: 120-seat flexible black box performance space

• Elementary Theatre: flexible proscenium theatre seating approximately 350–650

This is a generalist theatre technician role suited to someone with practical experience across multiple technical disciplines, including lighting, sound, projection and stage management.

Casual Technicians will work alongside the Theatre Team to support productions, events, rehearsals and day-to-day technical operations. The successful candidate will be comfortable working across different technical disciplines, adapting to the needs of different events, and working professionally alongside both staff and students.

Role Responsibilities

• Provide technical support for performances, rehearsals and events across lighting, sound, projection and stage management as required.

• Work alongside students and provide appropriate opportunities for them to participate in technical tasks, delegating responsibilities according to their experience and competence.

• Attend production meetings when required and contribute technical ideas, solutions and recommendations.

• Provide basic technical support for presentations, assemblies and school events, including lighting and AV systems. Training will be provided on SAS-specific systems.

• Support the safe and efficient load-in, setup, operation and load-out of technical equipment, including lighting equipment and cabling.

• Assist with the setup, operation and routine maintenance of theatre equipment and systems.

• Participate in troubleshooting, fault-finding and basic repairs and maintenance of departmental equipment within the limits of their training and competence.

• Maintain clean, organised and safe control rooms, technical areas and equipment stores.

• Communicate clearly with the Theatre Team regarding ongoing projects, technical requirements and any additional support required.

• Identify when additional technical support or external contractors may be required and communicate this to the Theatre Coordinator.

• Work collaboratively with other members of the Theatre Team and be willing to support across different technical disciplines when required.

• Model safe, professional and inclusive industry practices for students and colleagues.

• Follow all SAS Work Safety and Health policies and procedures.

• Undertake other reasonable duties related to the operation of the Theatre Department as directed by the Theatre Coordinator.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Practical experience working as a theatre or entertainment technician.

• Experience with ETC lighting control systems, including EOS programming and operation of ETC Ion and/or GIO consoles.

• Knowledge of analogue and digital audio systems, including the operation of sound consoles and wireless microphones.

• Experience operating projection and/or presentation systems.

• Understanding of safe theatre rigging practices.

• A good general understanding of theatre technical systems and signal flow.

• Strong commitment to safe working practices and the ability to identify and address potential safety concerns.

• Willingness and ability to learn SAS-specific equipment, systems and procedures.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications

The following would be advantageous:

• Single Vertical Platform Lifter (SVPL) licence/certification.

• Work at Height qualification.

• Formal theatre or entertainment technical qualification.

• Experience working professionally within the entertainment or performing arts industry.

• Formal rigging qualifications and/or experience safely rigging theatrical lighting equipment.

• Experience with counterweight fly systems.

• Experience with QLab or similar playback systems.

• Experience working with professional AV and digital networking systems.

Contract and Hours of Work

Employment Type: Casual / On-Call

Minimum Call: 4 hours

Work is offered on a casual, as-needed basis according to the operational requirements of the Theatre Department. Shifts may include rehearsals, performances, events, technical preparation, load-ins and load-outs.

Shifts will be communicated as far in advance as reasonably possible to support a healthy work-life balance.

The successful candidate must be available and willing to work evenings and weekends when scheduled.

Applicants who can provide flexible availability, including weekday evenings and weekends, will be particularly suited to this role.

Breaks, overtime and rest periods will be provided in accordance with applicable Singapore employment regulations.
