As a Pharmacy Intern, a caregiver in this role will gain hands-on experience supporting inpatient pharmacy operations while developing their clinical pharmacy skills. First-year interns receive training similar to pharmacy technicians and rotate through core pharmacy stations, including the medication carousel and IV room. IV training is provided as needed but is not required upon entry.

Second-year interns have the opportunity to expand their experience into more clinically focused activities, including medication histories, transitions of care, research and quality assurance projects. Interns may also have opportunities to shadow clinical pharmacists based on their interests and department availability. This role provides a progressive learning experience that allows interns to build technical, operational and clinical pharmacy skills throughout their training.

A caregiver in this position will work first and second shifts, with scheduled start and end times varying between 7:00 AM and 11:30 PM. During the school year, caregivers are required to work every third weekend. During the summer, the weekend requirement increases to every other weekend. Caregivers who are appropriately trained may also have the opportunity to pick up available third shifts.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Review and assess medication orders to identify, prevent, and resolve potential and actual drug related issues.

  • Recommend formulary alternatives when appropriate.

  • Compound and prepare medications for delivery to patient care areas.

  • Provide drug information and education to medical staff and patients.

  • Communicate with physicians and other clinicians as necessary to facilitate care.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Enrollment in an accredited College of Pharmacy Program meeting education requirements to qualify for an Intern License in the State of Ohio OR international pharmacy experience meeting the requirements to qualify for the Foreign Graduate Pharmacy Intern License

  • Current State Board of Pharmacy Intern License (PH/INT) before hire

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform job while standing, reaching, stretching and sitting for prolonged periods; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer functions of job.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.

Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $23.00

Maximum hourly: $23.00
