General Information & Responsibilities
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Blaze Mascot Performer represents the spirit, pride and personality of Black Hawk College at campus and community events. Student performers bring Blaze the Brave to life by creating a fun, welcoming and energetic presence at athletic events, student activities, recruitment events, community appearances, photo and video shoots and other College events.
This is an event-based student position with a variable schedule. Hours will fluctuate based on College events and mascot appearance requests. A set number of hours each week cannot be guaranteed. Many appearances will take place during evenings and weekends.
This is a district-wide position and may require travel between Black Hawk College locations or to approved community events.
Description of Duties
DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Perform as Blaze the Brave, the official Black Hawk College mascot, at approved College and community events.

Maintain the established personality, energy and character of Blaze while in costume.
-
Positively engage with students, employees, alumni, prospective students and community members through photos, high-fives, crowd interaction and other appropriate activities.
-
Support school spirit and student engagement at athletic events, Student Life activities, recruitment events, College celebrations and other appearances.

Participate in approved Marketing & Public Relations activities, including social media content, photo and video shoots, media appearances and promotional campaigns.
DESCRIPTION OF OTHER DUTIES:
-
Complete required mascot performer training and follow all safety, conduct and performance guidelines.

Work closely with the assigned mascot handler, who will accompany Blaze during all appearances and assist with safety, navigation, crowd interaction and event logistics.

Follow scheduled break, hydration and costume-use procedures.
-
Assist with proper care of the mascot costume and immediately report any damage, maintenance or safety concerns.

Maintain confidentiality regarding the identity of Blaze performers.
-
Represent Black Hawk College in a positive, responsible and professional manner.

Scheduling & Hours
-
Hours are sporadic and event-driven and may vary significantly from week to week.
-
A regular schedule or minimum number of weekly hours cannot be guaranteed.
-
Some weeks may have few or no available mascot appearances, while others may include multiple events.
-
The majority of mascot appearances are expected to occur during evenings and weekends, although occasional daytime events may be available.
-
Students will be scheduled based on College needs, event requests and performer availability.
Performers are not expected to accept every available appearance.

Demonstrate core BHC values.

Must be a currently enrolled Black Hawk College student in good academic standing.

Must be comfortable performing in front of groups and interacting with a variety of audiences.

Reliable, responsible and able to arrive on time for scheduled appearances.

Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with mascot handlers, Marketing & Public Relations staff and event organizers.
-
Ability to safely perform the physical activities associated with wearing a mascot costume, including walking, gesturing and interacting with attendees for designated periods of time.
-
Willingness to complete required mascot performer training and follow all College safety and conduct guidelines.

Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.

Costume Fit
-
The costume manufacturer recommends a performer approximately 5'7" tall and 180–200 pounds for optimal costume fit. These measurements are recommendations only and are not required qualifications for the position. Students outside of this range may be considered provided the costume can be worn safely and comfortably.

Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience in performing arts, athletics, cheer/dance, theater, school spirit activities or other physically active roles.

Energetic and outgoing personality.

Strong sense of timing, body language and nonverbal communication.

Interest in representing Black Hawk College and building school spirit.
