SUMMARY

SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for a Financial Aid Advisor position. Reporting to the Associate Director of Financial Aid, the Financial Aid Advisor is responsible for advising students on the availability of financial aid, the various aid programs offered, and related processes on a daily basis. The successful incumbent will also be responsible for the day-to-day verification and processing of student financial aid packages.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential Functions:

Student Financial Aid Counseling and Support Services

  • Advises students and parents on the availability of student aid, types of aid programs, processing procedures, and other consumer information related to financial aid.

  • Applies knowledge of the eligibility requirements of all aid programs, program procedures, as well as institutional procedures for aid programs.

  • Assists in developing and maintaining effective written communications for customers, including brochures, flyers, and other informational materials, as requested.

  • Addresses and resolves potential problems and difficulties in processing aid.

Financial Aid Analysis and Packaging

  • Performs needs analysis and packaging of student aid.

  • Understands the components that comprise the federal methodology.

  • Verifies that student-provided data is accurate and properly recorded in Banner.

  • Verifies that all documents in a student's file are properly indexed.

  • Requests clarification of discrepant data, as needed, in accordance with Financial Aid Office procedures.

  • Verifies that the financial aid package has been calculated correctly.

  • Explains the financial aid package to students and parents, including the types of aid programs and award amounts.

  • Repackages a financial aid package based upon new information received.

Staff and Student Support

  • Provides support to staff and students in the accurate processing, awarding, and coordination of financial aid programs.

  • Provides accurate and timely communication to Financial Aid Office staff and students.

  • Follows accurate processing procedures.

Admissions and Retention Activities

  • Supports admissions and retention initiatives related to financial aid, including high school presentations, Open Houses, and other outreach activities as needed.

  • Represents the Financial Aid Office at meetings with high school counselors, parents, and students to explain financial aid opportunities and procedures.

  • Develops and delivers presentations tailored to audiences seeking information about student financial aid programs and services.

  • Counsels on a confidential basis with parents who may have specific or unique concerns in applying for student aid.

  • Maintains ongoing communication with incoming/returning students.

Coordinator of Veteran Affairs Support

  • Serves as a certifying official.

  • Serves as a liaison with the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs.

  • Assumes administrative responsibility of the Office of Veteran Affairs.

  • Counsels students who have questions or concerns related to veterans' benefits.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Attends informational meetings, workshops, and other professional development activities.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university

  • A minimum of one year of experience working in financial aid or a related field

  • Experience working in a customer service environment

  • Demonstrated experience using computer software, databases, and/or student information systems (SIS)

  • Ability to work effectively with students, public, college community and external constituencies, with an appreciation for cultural and group differences

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a higher education setting

  • Experience working with document imaging systems

  • Multiple years of experience working in a financial aid office

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work Schedule:

37.5 hours/week: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm.

Retirement

  • NYS Employees' Retirement System (ERS) and NYS Teachers' Retirement System (TRS) - Defined benefit plans; benefits are based on best Final Average Salary and years of service.

  • SUNY Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) - Defined contribution plan; benefits are based on the employer and employee contributions and the success of the investments. Employer contribution is 9% of compensable salary up to $360,000 (2026 IRS income limit) for the first seven years of active membership; 11% thereafter.

Membership for full-time and permanent employees is mandatory. All full-time employees are eligible to elect ERS or the ORP; employees in teaching, librarian, or coach (including assistant) titles are also eligible for TRS and may choose any of the three plans.
