GhostRx Inc., a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), is seeking one (1) Cytopreparation Technician to support the Cytology section of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services at the Lt. Col. Luke Weathers, Jr. VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. You will prepare high-quality gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens that support accurate diagnoses for the Veterans who served our country.

Qualification and Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident (Green Card) status required to perform services under this federal contract

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English well enough to communicate effectively with pathologists, laboratory staff, and the care team; basic computer literacy required

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree or higher in a biological or laboratory science preferred

  • Minimum of 1 year of cytopreparation, histology, or anatomic pathology specimen processing experience within the preceding 3 years

  • ASCP or AMT laboratory credential a plus

  • Hands-on experience with liquid-based cytology platforms (ThinPrep and/or SurePath), cytocentrifugation, direct smears, and cell block preparation

  • Working knowledge of Papanicolaou, Diff-Quik, and other routine cytology stains and automated stainers/coverslippers

  • Knowledge of chemical safety, specimen handling, and laboratory information systems; VistA experience preferred

  • Ability to successfully complete a federal background investigation, fingerprinting, and VA credentialing package, including primary-source verification of education and certification

  • Documented immunizations and TB screening; annual privacy, information security, and bloodborne pathogen training required

  • Willingness to complete facility orientation and laboratory competency training before beginning the assigned schedule

Responsibilities

  • Receive, accession, and verify gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, including body fluids, urines, brushings, washings, and fine needle aspirations (FNAs)

  • Prepare slides using liquid-based, cytospin, direct smear, and cell block techniques according to specimen type and procedure

  • Perform Papanicolaou and other cytology stains, coverslip slides, and ensure slide quality and correct labeling before distribution to cytotechnologists and pathologists

  • Assist with FNA procedures and rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE), including slide preparation and specimen triage for ancillary studies

  • Perform and document daily quality control, instrument maintenance, and reagent and stain changes

  • Maintain specimen, slide, and cell block storage and retention according to CAP and CLIA requirements

  • Maintain a clean, safe work area and follow chemical hygiene, infection control, and bloodborne pathogen protocols

  • Comply with CAP, CLIA, and Joint Commission standards, HIPAA, and all facility rules and procedures
