Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:

The Department of English at Sam Houston State University seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in American Literature after 1865. The successful candidate will show evidence of an active research agenda in American literature, but the focus is open. Preference will be given to those researching African-American literature, Southern literature, or Latinx literature. This position will also be responsible for advising students in the English Education double major. An earned PhD in English by August 21, 2027 is required. This position requires a presence at our Huntsville campus.

The chosen candidate will teach three courses per semester (in-person or online), with a 3/2 teaching load in the first two years. Teaching involves undergraduate and graduate-level courses in any of the following areas:

  • American literature after 1865

  • World literature

  • African-American literature

  • Southern literature

  • Multicultural literature

  • First-year composition (typically once per year)

Other courses, such as English education classes focused on pedagogy, will vary with the candidate’s experience.

Other required activities include:

  • Advising students in the English Education program

  • Cultivating and maintaining an active research agenda

  • Actively engaging in recruitment and curriculum development

Educational Requirements for the Position (Faculty Positions Only):

A PhD in English from an accredited institution ( ABD candidates considered). ABD candidates must have doctoral degree conferred by start date.

Experience Required for the Position (Faculty Positions Only):

Demonstrated background in Secondary English Education, such as teaching in K-12, certification to teach, earned degree in English Education, completion of student teaching, or substantial graduate coursework in Education.

Evidence of an active research agenda that reflects the desired specialization in American literature.
