Careers Computational Geoscientist

About the Company Our mission is to discover the raw materials needed to create a prosperous world for the next 1000 years. With modern software and hardware, we aim to reduce mineral discovery timelines from 10 years to 1 year. Founded in 2023 by lifelong geoscientists, ExploreTech is a venture-backed business that develops technology and uses it to explore for minerals all over the world.

About the Role We’re accelerating the pace of mineral discovery. Our drill targeting has hit mineralized targets 8 for 8, a significant improvement over industry standards. That result depends on the quality of our subsurface models, and improving them is the focus of this role. As a Computational Geoscientist, you’ll develop and improve the numerical methods behind our targeting: forward modeling and inversion of geophysical data, and statistical and machine learning models that predict mineralization in 3D. You’ll test your methods against drilling results, which typically come back within months, and work with our software engineers to move methods that hold up into production. You’ll work alongside geologists, geophysicists, and engineers. What You’ll Do

  • Develop forward models and inversions for geophysical data
  • Build statistical and machine learning models that predict mineralization in 3D from geological and geophysical data
  • Design and run validation studies that compare model predictions with drilling results
  • Run large-scale numerical simulations on high-performance computing systems
  • Work with software engineers to move research code into production
  • Document and publish methods internally, and externally where appropriate
  • Join field campaigns to see how our data are collected

About You

  • PhD in geoscience, geophysics, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, or a related field (or equivalent research experience)
  • 3+ years of research experience in industry or academia (PhD research counts)
  • Strong background in numerical methods, inverse problems, and machine learning
  • Proficiency in Python and scientific computing, including work with large datasets
  • Publications or applied models that informed real-world decisions
  • Willing to travel occasionally to remote parts of the US and world

Location San Diego, California Field deployments as needed

Salary Starting at $180,000

Benefits 100% healthcare coverage (medical, dental, vision)
