Laser Metrology Technician

A-shift (7:00am - 3:30pm)

Minimum 40 hrs/week; overtime as needed

Job Summary and Essential Job Duties:

The Laser Metrology Technician position is responsible for completing various metrology tasks associated with the metrology equipment in the High Energy Laser & Advanced Coating Metrology labs. This includes, but is not limited to, laser damage threshold testing, photothermal common path interferometry, cavity ring down and other spectroscopy. This is an entry to middle level position for a detail oriented, technical, and organized individual.

Through On the Job Training (OJT), Laser Metrology Technicians will:

  • Complete advanced optical testing, including test setups, precision alignment, and completing measurements

  • Report metrology findings to Coating personnel

  • Calibrate lab equipment as needed and maintain test hardware readiness

  • Grow the Laser Metrology team by training and guiding newer technicians;

  • Participate in the development and refinement of standard operating procedures

  • Perform other duties as outlined by the Coating Production and Engineering teams

Advancement through the Laser Metrology Technician ranks is attained via increasing levels of education, experience, industrial skills, math skills, computing skills, responsibility and leadership potential and effectiveness.

Education Requirements:

  • A High School Diploma or GED required. Vocational training in manufacturing, carpentry, materials science, machining or similar strongly desired.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Three (3) years manufacturing and/or testing experience desired

  • Prior experience in the production and/or measurement of precision optics desired

  • Knowledge of cleaning and safe handling of optics is highly preferred

Other Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of optical materials and/or systems desired

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

  • Ability to solve problems

  • Possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written

  • Enthusiastic, cooperative and positive behavior

  • Strong attention to detail

Work Requirements:

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch: and talk and hear.

  • The job may involve prolong periods of sitting/standing.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.

Work Environment:

  • This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level can vary from quiet to loud frequencies.

  • May involve the use of oils and solvents.

  • Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.

  • Requires area specific laser safety training which will be provided upon hire.

  • The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use may be required.

  • May be assigned to various production areas as needs require.
