Full job description

Midlands Technical College is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Bluegrass Instructor to teach students the fundamentals of bluegrass music in an engaging, supportive, and hands-on learning environment. The instructor will introduce students to bluegrass performance techniques, ensemble playing, musicianship, and the history and traditions of bluegrass music. The ideal candidate will have experience performing and teaching bluegrass music and proficiency in one or more traditional bluegrass instruments, such as banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, or upright bass.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide engaging, hands-on instruction in bluegrass music and performance. Teach fundamental techniques appropriate for students' skill levels. Introduce students to traditional bluegrass songs, styles, rhythms, and arrangements. Teach students how individual instruments function within a bluegrass ensemble. Lead individual, small-group, and ensemble activities. Help students develop skills in rhythm, timing, chord progressions, melody, improvisation, and playing by ear. Introduce students to bluegrass history, traditions, terminology, and influential musicians.

Encourage collaboration and help students develop confidence performing with other musicians. Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and activities that support course learning objectives. Maintain an inclusive and encouraging classroom environment for students with varying levels of musical experience. Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback. Maintain accurate attendance and other required course documentation. Communicate with the Program Coordinator regarding course needs, scheduling, materials, equipment, and student concerns. Follow Midlands Technical College policies and procedures.

This position will be located on Midlands Technical College Harbison Campus. Demonstrated experience performing bluegrass music. Proficiency in at least one traditional bluegrass instrument, such as banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, or upright bass. Strong knowledge of bluegrass music, techniques, and traditions. Ability to effectively demonstrate and explain musical concepts to students. Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to work with students from a variety of musical backgrounds and skill levels. Previous experience teaching private lessons, group music classes, workshops, camps, festivals, or college-level courses. Experience performing as part of a bluegrass band or ensemble. Proficiency in multiple bluegrass instruments. Experience directing or coaching musical ensembles. Knowledge of music theory as it relates to bluegrass and traditional American music. Experience working with beginner through intermediate musicians.
