Full job description

Join UL Solutions as a Senior Accountant supporting the global accounting lifecycle for fixed assets and leases. In this highly visible role, you will help deliver accurate, timely financial results under U.S. GAAP, including ASC 360 and ASC 842, while strengthening the data, controls, and processes behind our capital asset and lease portfolios.

You will report to the Lease Accounting Manager and work within the Fixed Assets and Lease Accounting Center of Excellence in the Chief Accounting Officer’s organization. You will partner across Real Estate, Procurement, FP&A, Technical Accounting, project teams, and regional finance to solve accounting issues, improve processes, and support domestic and international operations.

What you will gain

This role offers broad exposure to global accounting operations, cross-functional decision-making, and opportunities to improve systems and processes in a public-company environment.

This is a full-time, hybrid (3 days on-site) position located at our Northbrook, IL office.

Fixed Asset & Lease Accounting

  • Partner with project managers and asset owners to monitor capital projects, challenge aged construction in progress (CIP), and drive timely, well-supported capitalization.

  • Coordinate fixed asset cycle counts and investigate exceptions to help safeguard the accuracy and completeness of the asset register.

  • Prepare and post journal entries for additions, disposals, transfers, depreciation, impairments, and other fixed asset activity.

  • Maintain the fixed asset subledger and help ensure transactions, master data, and adjustments are complete, accurate, and recorded on time.

  • Support global lease accounting and reporting under ASC 842, including the completeness and accuracy of the lease population.

  • Evaluate the accounting impact of new leases, modifications, renewals, extensions, terminations, and reassessments, escalating complex matters when appropriate.

  • Administer lease accounting system data and strengthen related governance, controls, and data quality.

Financial Reporting & Close

  • Own monthly reconciliations between the fixed asset subledger, lease accounting system, and general ledger; investigate and resolve differences promptly.

  • Analyze movements in fixed assets, right-of-use assets, lease liabilities, and depreciation or amortization expense, and translate key drivers into clear management insights.

  • Maintain and validate lease schedules and supporting data to enable accurate accounting, reporting, and disclosures under ASC 842.

  • Prepare and review monthly lease journal entries and account reconciliations for lease liabilities, right-of-use assets, and related expense accounts.

Business Partnership & Data Quality

  • Build effective relationships with business partners and promote complete, accurate, and well-governed fixed asset and lease data.

  • Research transactions, resolve accounting questions, and perform financial analysis for U.S. and international subsidiaries.

  • Communicate conclusions clearly and work across functions, time zones, and levels of the organization to bring issues to resolution.

Compliance, Audit & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain clear, audit-ready schedules, reconciliations, and accounting documentation in accordance with SOX requirements.

  • Support internal and external audits, including document requests, walkthroughs, and control testing, and help resolve findings efficiently.

  • Identify opportunities to simplify, standardize, automate, and strengthen accounting processes; contribute to system implementations and other finance initiatives.

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

  • At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on fixed asset and/or lease accounting.

  • Solid knowledge of U.S. GAAP, with practical experience applying ASC 360 and ASC 842.

  • Experience using an ERP and fixed asset subledger; Oracle experience is a plus.

  • Experience with lease accounting software; LeaseCalcs or a comparable platform is preferred.

  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with consistent attention to detail and data quality.

  • Ability to prioritize competing demands, meet close and reporting deadlines, and take ownership through resolution.

  • Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Preferred

  • Experience in a public company or similarly complex, multi-entity environment.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience working with large data sets, reconciliations, and account rollforwards.

  • Experience supporting SOX controls and internal or external audits.

  • Experience improving accounting processes, supporting system enhancements, or using automation to reduce manual work.

  • CPA or active progress toward certification.

  • Experience partnering with cross-functional and international teams.
