Job Summary

XTRM/SPRL Labs is a facility of the College of Engineering that serves clients who are faculty, government agencies (such as NASA and DoD), and commercial companies in the development of

unique integrated systems and instrumentation that are often used in challenging environments (e.g. space, arctic, above/on/below the water). The XTRM/SPRL Lab professional staff, with faculty and researchers, have built more than 35 space systems and instruments; instrumented numerous sounding rockets, balloons and aircraft; and developed ground-based instruments. For seven decades SPRL has been one of a handful of university centers able to conceive, design, build, test, and operate space flight instruments a truly "end-to-end" operation.

The engineer will perform engineering design and testing work in the sub-field of space instrumentation for space and planetary sciences with an emphasis on design and control system. The engineer will be responsible for implementation of hardware and software subsystems in support of primary research and instrument development. This includes assisting with new instrument development and instrument testing using specialized equipment. Electronic design is anticipated supporting data system development, and signal conditioning electronics. These duties are performed under supervision and direction by experienced engineers.

Responsibilities*

Performing circuit and schematic design from requirements and developing the associated design documentation and test planning.

Instrument testing, including use of specialized equipment

Support of proposal development especially in space systems

Designing, developing, testing, and evaluating programmable hardware devices, digital circuits, and/or embedded systems.

Data systems design, including selection of parts, materials, and process to survive harsh environments.

Programming, modifying, and/or configuring system firmware that manages the reprogrammable hardware and associated interfaces to provide services to the applications.

Applying software engineering principles to design, develop, test, and evaluate/modify software /firmware applications.

Working with other engineering teams and clients on a regular basis to discuss design concepts, potential problems, and proposed resolutions.

Required Qualifications*

BS in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or relevant areas

Familiarity with digital systems (FPGA, ASICs, PCB, Microcontrollers, etc.).

Understanding the process for developing electronic designs and test procedures from requirements.
