Full job description

SCPS is hiring a full-time teaching professor at the Assistant or Associate rank to help launch and grow the new Master of Change Management (https://www.scps.virginia.edu/programs/online-master-change-management-degree) (MCM) program. MCM is an interdisciplinary graduate degree for mid-career professionals who lead organizational change across industries and sectors, with coursework in communication, stakeholder engagement, process design, and data-informed decision-making. SCPS is accepting applications this fall for the program's first cohort, which begins classes in January 2027.

MCM is a small faculty team that joins a broader team that supports multiple related graduate and undergraduate certificate programs. This role emphasizes teaching, however the person hired will contribute to program administration and curriculum strategy alongside the MCM co-directors, and will serve as academic advisor to an assigned group of students. We're looking for someone who has experience with building academic programs or with relevant transferable skills. There is no explicit research requirement for this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach in the MCM core curriculum. Readiness to teach at least three of the six core courses — PSCM 6000, 6010, 6020, 6030, 6040, and 6050 — including the capstone, is required within the first few years of hire.

  • Serve as capstone advisor and evaluator for student projects tied to real organizational change work.

  • Advise an assigned group of MCM students for the length of their program.

  • Contribute to program administration and strategy alongside the MCM co-directors.

  • Support recruitment by meeting with prospective students and contributing to recruitment planning.

  • Participate in curriculum committee meetings, program planning, and other school-wide faculty activities.

  • Contribute to curriculum updates, assessment, and program review as the degree matures.

  • Collaborate with SCPS instructional designers on course design and delivery.

  • Stay current on developments in change management, adult learning, and online education.

All MCM courses are delivered fully online. Several cross-list with SCPS graduate certificates in leadership, human resources, project management, and public administration.

A fulltime teaching load is ten (10) 3-credit hour courses per year (Fall, Spring, and Summer terms). This position is expected to receive release for course equivalents of (a) service, (b) student recruitment, and potentially (future) (c) program coordination or direction subject to candidate qualifications, interest, and negotiation. This is expected to result in a teaching load of 6-8 courses annually (e.g., 2-2-2, 3-3-2, etc.). Load and release are determined annually and may change depending on School and program needs.

This is a non-tenure track, general faculty position. This is a remote position, with preference for individuals able to attend occasional in-person meetings and events held in or near Charlottesville, Virginia.

Required Qualifications

  • A terminal degree in change management, organizational behavior, organizational leadership, industrial-organizational psychology, business administration, public administration, project management, or a closely related field. A Ph.D. is preferred; other terminal degrees such as an Ed.D., D.B.A., D.M., or D.P.A. will also be considered.

  • At least five years leading change as a manager or consultant.

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching or training, ideally in an online or hybrid format.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a track record of inclusive teaching practice.

  • Experience working with mid-career adult learners balancing professional and personal demands.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience advising capstone or other applied, project-based coursework.

  • Prior experience with curriculum development or academic program leadership.

  • Familiarity with project management frameworks, user-centered design, or data-informed decision-making.

  • Experience across public, nonprofit, and private sector contexts.

  • A professional certification in change management (e.g., Prosci) or project management (e.g., PMP).

Include a cover letter, a current CV, a statement of teaching philosophy that speaks to your experience with adult and online learners, a sample syllabus from a course you've designed or taught, and contact information for three professional references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by November 1, 2026. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
