Full job description

The Inpatient Clinical Counselor Candidate provides clinical services to patients in an acute psychiatric unit. This role focuses on crisis stabilization, assessment, and therapeutic interventions. Licensure candidates operate under the supervision of a fully licensed clinician. The counselor collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to support patient safety, lead group and individual therapy, develop and execute treatment plans, and plan discharge.

  • Conduct psychosocial assessments

  • Assist in developing individualized treatment plans

  • Provide individual and group therapy (e.g., CBT, DBT)

  • Support crisis intervention and de-escalation

  • Monitor and document patient progress and behaviors

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary treatment team

  • Participate in clinical supervision and team meetings

  • Assist with discharge planning and aftercare coordination

  • Provide psychoeducation on mental health and coping strategies

  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation

  • Assist in milieu management and help direct other team members

  • Perform a variety of organizational and administrative tasks as required, collaborating with behavioral health unit leadership

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field

  • Licensed in Montana as one of the following:

  • LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor) or LCPC Candidate/PCLC

  • LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) or LCSW Candidate/SWLC

  • Or other equivalent Montana licensure credential

  • In good standing with the Montana licensing board

  • Knowledge of mental health disorders and therapeutic interventions

  • Strong communication and organizational skills

Supervision & Development:

  • Candidates will receive regular clinical supervision from a licensed mental health professional and accrue clinical hours toward full licensure

  • Participate in case reviews, training, and professional development opportunities

  • Demonstrate ongoing growth in clinical judgment, ethics, and therapeutic skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Internship or practicum experience in behavioral health or psychiatric settings

  • Exposure to crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, or group therapy

  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles
