Full job description

Per Diem Family Peer Advocate

The Opportunity

The Family Peer Advocate will incorporate personal experience parenting a child with special needs to support parents and strengthen their ability to keep their child at home and within their community.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with families according to their scheduling needs

  • Increase awareness of and enhance family strengths.

  • Advocate for services and systems that are fair, responsive, and family driven.

  • Assist families to rediscover and reconnect to natural community supports.

  • Promote effective parent-professional system partnerships.

  • Address barriers that may prevent full service participation.

  • Empower families to make informed decisions and advocate on behalf of and in collaboration to promote shared decision making.

  • Prepare and accompany families to meetings to ensure their voice is included in the planning and decision-making at all levels.

  • Conduct groups to offer opportunities for families to connect and reduce isolation.

  • Link to and provide workshops to enhance parenting skills.

  • Complete all documentation by required deadlines and in compliance with agency and funding regulations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Family Peer Advocate Certification preferred.

  • Intermediate computer skills.

  • Must have lived experience parenting a child with special needs.

  • Valid and clean driver's license.

Additional Information

Location: Bohemia

Salary: $20/hr

Schedule: Per-Diem, up to 15 hours per week
