About the role of Software Development Engineer IV, Appian Developer

As part of the Corporate Services and Digital Automation Engineering team , you will help transform how Premera delivers healthcare operations by building innovative workflow automation solutions that improve employee productivity, enhance customer experiences, and streamline complex business processes.

We are looking for an experienced Software Development Engineer IV – Appian Developer to lead the design, development, and evolution of enterprise-scale workflow automation solutions. This role will play a key part in delivering highly visible initiatives across areas such as Appeals, Prior Authorization, and other healthcare operations by leveraging Appian, AI-powered automation, and cloud-based integrations .

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who enjoys solving complex business problems, mentoring team members, influencing architecture decisions, and continuously exploring emerging technologies to drive business value.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, and support enterprise workflow automation solutions using Appian , Microsoft technologies, and related automation platforms.

  • Partner with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Architects, and stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

  • Lead the delivery of complex business process automation initiatives, including case management, workflow orchestration, document processing, and system integrations.

  • Develop and maintain integrations with internal and external systems using RESTful APIs, web services, and event-driven architectures.

  • Leverage Appian AI capabilities and intelligent automation technologies to improve classification, extraction, summarization, routing, and decision-support processes.

  • Provide technical leadership and engineering guidance to developers across projects and initiatives.

  • Drive operational excellence through code reviews, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and production support activities.

  • Promote engineering best practices, reusable components, and platform governance standards.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to continuously improve business processes and customer experiences.

  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies, bringing innovative ideas to the team.

What you’ll bring:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems. (Required)

  • Eight (8) years of relevant experience, knowledge of software development lifecycle, and skills to utilize one or more programming languages. ( Required).

  • Appian experience (Strongly preferred).

  • Expertise in business process automation solutions. (Preferred)

  • Exposure to restful API’s and creating services for integrations. (Preferred)

  • Ability to communicate well and represent your team to other teams or leadership. (Preferred)

  • Ability to adapt to new technologies per business needs.

  • Experience working in an Agile environment.

  • Experience working in the healthcare industry or a highly regulated environment.

The pay for this role will vary based on a range of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s geographic location, market conditions, and specific skills and experience.

The salary range for this role is posted below; we generally target up to and around the midpoint of the range.

National Plus Salary Range:

$135,600.00 - $230,500.00

*National Plus salary range is used in higher cost of labor markets including Western Washington and Alaska .
