Description

As a Part-Time Bus Operator for Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit, Inc. you will be responsible for providing safe and reliable transportation to TCAT passengers while delivering exceptional customer service. You will play a pivotal role in connecting people to education, healthcare, employment and popular local destinations. Your day will include checking in with dispatch, performing vehicle inspections, navigating your route, monitoring fare box collection, and providing information and assistance to the public. Every day on the road gives you the chance to develop and refine your skills, making for a challenging yet highly rewarding experience. Once satisfactorily completing a probationary period, part-time employees are normally scheduled to work weekend shifts and/or weekday afternoon/evening hours, with a regular workweek of between 6 (six) to 35 (thirty-five) hours per week.

In addition to seeking experienced CDL drivers, applications demonstrating safety-mindedness and strong customer service experience may be selected for the opportunity to receive company-paid CDL training with our dedicated and highly-skilled staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide safe, courteous, on-time transportation to the public. • Provide information and direction to the public through listening and interacting with the customers with the intent to help meet his/her needs. • Communicate with Dispatch by radio through verbal and written reports. • Punctuality and regular attendance are essential to provide dependable service to the public.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • work a regularly repeating schedule between 6-35 hours per week, with shifts falling on weekdays after 4pm or on weekends.

  • at least 21 years of age.

  • high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).

  • New York State commercial driver license Class B with Passenger & Air Brake endorsements.

  • subject to NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law’s 19-A requirements.

  • possess good knowledge of safe driving practices, vehicle traffic laws and regulations.

  • ability to navigate roadways in Ithaca and Tompkins County without GPS-assistance.

  • demonstrated ability to work effectively with peers.

  • good communication and customer service skills.

  • read and follow written schedules and instructions.

  • exercise good judgment with respect to passenger and equipment safety.

  • be alert and drive in all types of weather and be seated for 4-10 hrs/day

  • bend, twist, stoop, or crouch in the performance of pre-trips and other bus operator duties

Working Conditions:

  • May come in contact with diesel fuel, fluids, petroleum products, and toxic fumes.

  • Exposed to inclement weather, icy conditions.

  • Noise level is moderately loud due to running of gas and diesel engines.

  • Works shifts that may be up to 12 hours per day due to splits.
