Estimator Apprentice — Registered Apprenticeship ProgramPro-Spec Painting Corporation — Vineland, NJ

Are you the kind of person who figures things out? When something does not work, you do not quit — you find another way. You like computers. You are good with numbers. You want more than a dead-end paycheck at a corporation where no one knows your name.

If that describes you, read on. Your degree matters less than your drive.

Pro-Spec Painting Corporation has operated continuously for over 46 years, estimating and performing projects of national prominence — stadiums, convention centers, water treatment facilities, bridges, industrial plants. We are building the next generation of this company: a team of driven professionals who will take Pro-Spec to its greatest levels. This apprenticeship is how our estimating team grows.

This is a Registered Apprenticeship with the US/NJ Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training. Four years, 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. You finish with the skills, certifications, and salary of a professional construction estimator — and a seat on a team that is going somewhere.

What You Will Learn

  • Estimating practices and procedures: determining scope, performing takeoffs, calculating costs of labor, material, equipment, and subcontractors using the PDCA Estimating Guide for Painting Contracts

  • Estimating software: Sage Estimating, eTakeoff, Bluebeam, and advanced computer tools that research problems, cross-check data, draft documents, and build automations — tools most companies talk about but do not use. Here, you use them every day.

  • Construction administration, working toward certification with the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) as a Certified Construction Document Administrator

  • Project management on commercial and industrial coatings projects

  • Reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and bid documents at increasing levels of complexity

Who We Are Looking For

We are not looking for someone content with average. We are looking for someone hungry — someone who does not quit when the work gets hard, who wants to build a career that rises above a normal paycheck job. Character matters here. Aptitude and reliability matter here.

  • Interest in the construction industry and how buildings get built

  • Basic understanding and ability to read construction drawings

  • Strong computer skills — you learn new software quickly and push technology to its limit

  • Solid grasp of mathematics and formulas, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel

  • Attention to detail and strong written communication

  • Problem solver — when something does not make sense, you dig in until it does

  • Reliable — you show up, on time, every day. No exceptions.

  • Valid driver’s license (New Jersey within 60 days of hire)

  • Local to South Jersey with a daily commute to Vineland (Cumberland, Salem, Gloucester, Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Burlington counties)

No specific degree required. Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Business, IT, or any technical background is useful — but work ethic and aptitude matter more than the diploma.

Salary Progression — 4-Year Program (8,000 Hours)

  • 1st 1,000 Hours: $40,000/year

  • 2nd 1,000 Hours: $45,000/year

  • 3rd 1,000 Hours: $50,000/year

  • 4th 1,000 Hours: $55,000/year

  • 5th 1,000 Hours: $60,000/year

  • 6th 1,000 Hours: $65,000/year

  • 7th 1,000 Hours: $70,000/year

  • 8th 1,000 Hours: $75,000/year plus bonus

Benefits

  • Paid holidays and time off

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Group health plan

  • On-the-job training and industry certification (LEED, AACE CEP, OSHA 10/30, EPA RRP, CSI)

  • Tuition and certification fee reimbursement

The Path

This is where your career goes:

  • Year 1: Learn the fundamentals — takeoffs, software, how projects are priced

  • Year 3: Run your own estimates on commercial projects

  • Year 5: Senior Estimator — managing bids, mentoring the next apprentice

  • Year 10+: There is an ownership conversation down the road for the right person

The founder of this company started as a painter apprentice and built Pro-Spec over 46 years. That path was not an accident — it was character, persistence, and hunger. Pro-Spec is building the team that will carry this company forward, and the people on that team will share in what they build.
