About the Role, Mission or Department Overview

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It's why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It's why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it's why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it's worth paying for.

About the position

To help us do this essential work, The New York Times is hiring a Senior Manager, Strategic Business Communications.

In this role, you'll be part of a team that leads internal communication on the business side of The Times, with a focus on XFun, our cross-functional product development organization. You'll partner closely with XFun leadership, their chiefs of staff, HR, Legal, Labor Relations and other stakeholders across the org — bringing our strategy, priorities and culture to life, and elevating the employee experience for our team. You're comfortable working in a highly matrixed organization, bringing together many voices and priorities in service of The Times's mission, and you take real pride in helping colleagues feel seen, connected and celebrated for their work.

We're looking for someone who can manage several projects at once — some you'll lead, some you'll support — with experience helping executives and leaders accomplish their communication goals, ideally within a tech company or similarly fast-moving environment. You're an impeccable writer and you know how to make communications break through the noise, including through audio, video and other formats. You come with big ideas, the drive to see them through, and a collaborative spirit that puts the team and the work first.

Responsibilities

• Connect colleagues to strategy and culture through communications, events and experiences.

• Support communications and planning for All Hands and other internal events for XFun, Wirecutter and The Athletic — including recurring programs like Maker Week (our annual hackathon), EngX (our annual engineering gathering), and Behind the Report (our monthly series designed to connect colleagues with our mission).

• Develop All hands agendas, prepare presenters, and manage scheduling and event logistics, from invitations and calendars to space bookings and catering.

• Own communications plans across a range of topics and issues, working closely with leaders to draft communications, facilitate cascades across the organization, and help leaders share timely, aligned updates with their teams in a highly matrixed organization.

• Own internal communications for external product launches (e.g., Games, Cooking, News), partnering with Product, Marketing, and XFun Ops to ensure employees understand what's launching and why it matters.

• Own the XFun-all Slack channel, ensuring information inclusive, and aligned with XFun priorities.

• Experiment with new formats — short-form video, audio/podcast content, interactive posts — to keep communications and events dynamic and engaging.

• Serve as the central point of contact for XFun managers, owning a yearly engagement plan (including the managers Slack channel and producing recurring manager meetings) and partnering with Labor and Legal on sensitive communications.

• Elevate XFun's work through 3–4 stories a year with the Storytelling team and segments at company-wide meetings.

• Own communications for core people programs (the performance cycle, required training, the employee survey and benefits updates), and partner with HR, Legal and leadership on personnel matters such as departures, org changes and executive hires.

• Champion recognition across XFun, executing on existing plans, finding new ways to celebrate wins big and small, and spotlighting major moments like Publisher Awards and team milestones.

• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in communications in a Global organization.

• Experience executing internal events, from All Hands to large-scale gatherings, including comfort managing both content and logistics.

• Experience producing multimedia content — such as video, audio, or interactive formats.

• Experience with project management tools and methodologies and managing concurrent workstreams.

• Experience managing multiple stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in highly matrixed technology companies.

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
