Job Description

The Applied AI Engineer accelerates R&D innovation by applying AI solutions to improve decision making and engineering productivity across the global Flexibles R&D organization. This role identifies high-value opportunities for AI and develops scalable solutions ranging from knowledge discovery and intelligent automation to predictive modeling and decision support. Working closely with R&D, IT, Information Security, and business stakeholders, the position ensures responsible adoption, resilient solutions, and measurable business impact. The role also helps shape Amcor's R&D AI strategy by evaluating emerging technologies and identifying new ways to leverage technical knowledge, data, and insights across the organization.

WHAT YOU GET TO DO

Applied AI & Digital Innovation

  • Develop and deploy AI-enabled knowledge systems that connect structured and unstructured enterprise data and R&D content, making technical information accessible and actionable

  • Deliver AI-assisted decision-support capabilities — including material and construction selection and product design validation — that improve the speed, quality, and consistency of technical and business decisions

  • Solve meaningful business problems — using predictive modeling, intelligent automation, knowledge systems, and generative AI solutions — selecting the right technique based on value, practicality, and scalability

  • Establish testing, monitoring, and evaluation practices that keep these systems reliable, transparent, and aligned with responsible AI principles

  • Evaluate emerging technologies — retrieval, generative AI, and applied machine learning — and translate them into practical applications for R&D, contributing to Amcor's long-term AI strategy

Knowledge & Data Engineering

  • Build and maintain the data structures, semantic layers, metadata, and retrieval mechanisms that enable AI systems to effectively interpret, connect, and use R&D's structured and unstructured information.

  • Serve as subject-matter expert in R&D systems, encoding domain knowledge — schema semantics, data relationships, units — into the AI infrastructure (model providers, data stores, orchestration and evaluation frameworks) so answers are correct rather than merely plausible

  • Identify and close the data gaps that block the AI capability directly, and partner with data engineering and IT functions on general ingest and pipeline work

  • Define the information architecture, knowledge-management standards, and governance approaches that ensure R&D knowledge remains machine-interpretable, reusable, and scalable across AI applications.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Adoption

  • Assess security exposure and cost before extending model access to new R&D systems and data, and work through how each capability fits into global R&D processes ahead of broader rollout

  • Partner with business and other R&D functions to make advanced models, recommendations, and insights more accessible, explainable, and actionable for end users

  • Work with R&D engineers to understand how design decisions are actually made, and build to that workflow rather than to a demonstration

  • Drive adoption across the business groups through stakeholder engagement, change management, and clear measurement of business impact and sustained usage

  • Partner with IT, Information Security and Legal on responsible AI deployment, confidential data protection, data residency and acceptable use, and across R&D and Operations, translating technical concepts into actionable recommendations for multiple audiences

WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU

  • Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or a related technical discipline; advanced degree advantageous

  • 3+ years of industry experience in software engineering, data science, machine learning engineering or applied AI, including systems that ran in production

  • Demonstrated experience building applied AI solutions, including large language model applications, machine learning systems, intelligent automation, or knowledge-discovery tools that achieved measurable business value and adoption

  • Working familiarity with the building blocks of modern AI applications: retrieval and embeddings, prompt and context design, structured output, tool use and evaluation. Depth in several matters more than exposure to all. The emphasis is on applying commercially available technologies to business problems — generative AI, knowledge systems, intelligent automation, and other emerging capabilities — rather than developing foundation models

  • Sound practical judgment regarding model limitations — hallucination, retrieval failure, evaluation — and experience designing systems that fail safely and visibly

  • Understanding of polymer science, film extrusion or food-packaging interactions preferred; genuine interest in learning the domain is essential

  • High proficiency in Python and SQL, including data pipelines and turning unstructured technical content into machine-usable form. Azure experience preferred

  • Proven delivery of cross-functional projects with measurable business impact

  • Ability to travel occasionally (<10%)

Our Expectations

We expect our people to be guided by The Amcor Way and demonstrate our Values every day to enable the business to win. We are winning when:

  • The environment is better off because of Amcor’s leadership and products
