About LASMNY For nearly 75 years, the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York (LASMNY) has provided free civil legal assistance to people who cannot afford an attorney. Our mission is to expand access to the essentials of life through high-quality, compassionate legal advocacy and education. Because legal problems rarely occur in isolation, we take a holistic approach that addresses the interconnected challenges affecting housing, income, benefits, health, and family stability. By working across practice areas and partnering with community organizations, we help clients achieve lasting solutions that extend beyond a single legal matter. Through offices in Utica, Syracuse, Binghamton, Oswego, Oneonta, and Watertown, LASMNY serves residents of thirteen counties across Central New York. Our Agricultural Worker Project also provides legal services to farmworkers throughout New York State. Job Summary

LASMNY is seeking an experienced domestic relations attorney to serve as Supervising Attorney for our work with survivors of intimate partner violence. This is an opportunity to lead and mentor a dedicated team while helping survivors and their children achieve safety, stability, and independence.

The Supervising Attorney oversees matrimonial and family law representation for survivors, including divorce, custody and visitation, child support, and related civil matters. Survivors of intimate partner violence make up nearly a quarter of the clients LASMNY serves, and this position helps ensure they receive skilled, trauma-informed advocacy.

Survivors often face several connected problems at once, including housing instability, loss of income or public benefits, and debt created through economic abuse. The Supervising Attorney leads a holistic approach that looks beyond the family law matter, working with LASMNY's other practice areas and with domestic violence service providers to address the full range of needs that affect a survivor’s safety and long-term stability.

The Supervising Attorney supervises and evaluates attorneys and staff, carries a caseload, and ensures compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations, grant requirements, and LASMNY policies. This is one position, which may be based in either our Utica or Syracuse office.

Essential Job Duties

  • Supervise attorneys and support staff representing survivors of intimate partner violence in orders of protection, divorce, custody and visitation, child support, and related civil matters.

  • Manage the team’s caseload by assigning new matters, balancing workloads, and conducting regular case reviews to ensure effective, high-quality representation.

  • Train, mentor, and support staff, fostering professional growth and maintaining a supportive, healthy work environment.

  • Conduct employee work performance evaluations and address work performance concerns in a timely and effective manner.

  • Maintain an active caseload, providing advice, negotiation, and litigation services in Family Court, Supreme Court, and Integrated Domestic Violence (IDV) parts.

  • Ensure the delivery of culturally responsive, trauma-informed legal services that prioritize client safety and well-being.

  • Lead holistic representation by screening clients for related legal needs, such as housing, public benefits, consumer debt, and economic abuse, and coordinating with LASMNY's other practice areas and community partners to address them.

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with domestic violence service providers, human services agencies, community organizations, the courts, and the private bar to strengthen referrals and coordinated services.

  • Oversee program administration, including grant reporting, compliance, timekeeping, file maintenance, case management, and accurate recordkeeping.

  • Conduct community outreach and legal education for survivors, advocates, service providers, and other stakeholders.

  • Stay current on developments in family law and intimate partner violence and maintain required Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits.

Professional Standards

  • Demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and discretion when handling confidential and sensitive client information, including information that affects client safety.

  • Communicate effectively and courteously with clients, staff, attorneys, court personnel, agency staff, and community partners.

  • Model a respectful, collaborative, and accountable workplace for supervised staff.

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance in accordance with organizational policies.

  • Adapt to new technologies and systems, including legal research tools and case management software.

  • Comply with all Legal Services Corporation regulations, LASMNY policies and procedures, and grant-based reporting requirements.

  • Perform additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by a supervisor based on agency needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Master of Laws (LL.M.) from an accredited law school.

  • Admission to practice law in New York State. Attorneys admitted in another jurisdiction and eligible for admission on motion are encouraged to apply.

  • At least three years of relevant legal experience, including experience with matrimonial or family law litigation.

  • Demonstrated commitment to serving survivors of intimate partner violence and low-income communities.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and advocacy skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, case management systems, and computerized legal research.

  • Ability to travel as needed, including to courts and other LASMNY offices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising attorneys, paralegals, or support staff, including conducting performance evaluations.

  • Experience representing survivors of intimate partner violence, including in order of protection proceedings.

  • Training or experience in trauma-informed practice.

  • Experience delivering holistic or interdisciplinary legal services, including collaboration with social workers, case managers, or domestic violence advocates.

  • Experience in civil legal services or other public interest practice.

  • Familiarity with LSC regulations and grant compliance.

  • Proficiency in languages other than English.
