Full job description

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state's renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life. LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information, and technology.

This position serves as the first-line supervisor for sworn enforcement personnel assigned to a District or lower level Wildlife Investigators. Supervises and assists sworn personnel engaged in the investigation and enforcement of all laws, rules, and regulations as delegated to the departmental and commission.

This is a promotional opportunity, open only to current permanent, classified employees of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries/Enforcement Division.

One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been as a Wildlife Enforcement Corporal or higher rank in state service:

Five years of experience in wildlife conservation law enforcement.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Applicants may be required to qualify as an ex-officio notary public.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

NOTE: This job has special physical requirements in that the incumbent must lift heavy objects (50 lbs. or more), walk long distances, work in harsh weather conditions, fire handguns, rifles, and shotguns accurately, and have the ability to operate vehicles, boats, and all-terrain vehicles while in the performance of duties.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.Job Duties:

  • Investigates wildlife-related crimes that cross state boundaries, such as smuggling and trafficking of regulated species.
  • Supports covert operations through site surveys, administrative documentation and equipment coordination.
  • Identifies and mitigates risks associated with wildlife law enforcement operations.
  • Develops and coordinates training programs for law enforcement personnel within assigned regions.
  • Prepares detailed reports and maintains investigative documentation to meet accreditation standards.
  • Supervises the gathering of evidence, preparation of warrants, and effecting of arrests.

Position-Specific Details: Appointment Type: This is a promotional opportunity, open only to current permanent, classified employees of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries/Enforcement Division. Location: There are 2 position. These positions are domiciled in Region 3 (Rapides Parish) and Region 8 (Orleans Parish) A Driver's License is required. Shift Differential: This position is eligible for a shift differential in addition to the base hourly rate when scheduled to work designated evening, night, weekend, or other qualifying shifts. The applicable differential is subject to LDWF's current compensation policies. Overtime as necessary.
