The Department of Art and Art History in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah invites applications for a Visiting Artist in Ceramics for the academic year 2027-2028 as part of The Marva and John Warnock Endowed Art Residency Program.

Position Summary : This is a nine-month residency with responsibility for teaching three courses over the two semesters of the residency. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the Artist in Residence will use their time at the University of Utah to create a body of work based on an initial proposal. The Artist will be provided with studio space and full access to our extensive studiofacilities. The successful candidate will teach two courses in ceramics that are currently listed in our coursecatalog(specifics to be determined based on candidate’s experience and departmental needs), and one master class designed to be accessible to advanced students from a variety of disciplines within the Department of Art and Art History who are interested in developing their understanding of ceramics practices.

Qualifications:

  • MFA in ceramics or a related field;

  • active exhibition record;

  • expertise in both traditional and emerging ceramic methods and practices;

  • minimum two years college-level teaching experience in ceramics beyond graduate school preferred.

Responsibilities: The Artist in Residence will

  • teach a 2/1 course load;

  • give an introductory artist talk in the Department of Art and Art History in the fall semester;

  • offer a public presentation of the creative results of the residency in the spring semester;

  • be available for studio critiques with advanced undergraduate and graduate students at least once per semester.

If you choose to provide a link to your website, please supplement your artist’s statement with one paragraph identifying the works on the website that are most relevant to your application.

  • A proposed syllabus for the Master Class;

  • a detailed project proposal;

  • examples of relevant syllabi;

  • names and contact information for three professional references.
