Full job description

Description

Own the backend that puts 10+ billion packages a year into customers' hands. On-Road Execution (ORE) builds the Tier-1 services that manage the real-time execution state of every Amazon delivery driver's itinerary — the critical link between route planning, station operations, and the Rabbit app.

We're looking for a backend engineer who wants hard distributed-systems problems at massive scale, with real ownership and end-to-end autonomy. In this role you'll:

  • Design and operate Tier-1 services at up to 99.95% uptime, absorbing 2-3X traffic during peak

  • Help stand up a brand-new Tier-1 service from the ground up

  • Drive a live architecture migration and re-architect our enrichment platform to an event-driven model

  • Power Amazon's fastest delivery programs — same-day, ultra-fast, and 15-30 minute deliveries

  • Work in a GenAI-forward team where AI tooling is part of how every engineer builds

Key job responsibilities

As a Backend SDE on ORE, you'll design, build, test, and operate mission-critical Tier-1 distributed services at scale, owning your work end to end — from design through launch and into production on-call. You will:

  • Develop FIPS (FlexItineraryProviderService), the aggregator between backend systems and the Rabbit app — gathering sequence (IM), assignment (PTRAS), and TR metadata (PTRS), enriching in parallel, and translating into Rabbit models.

  • Build on Itinerary Manager (IM), our materialized-view system of record, storing stops and tasks in DynamoDB/S3 and publishing change notifications via SNS.

  • Evolve PTRAS, our transport-request assignment authority and Common Dispatcher Interface.

  • Drive the Task-Based Architecture (TBAR) migration toward a contract/task model enabling multi-action deliveries.

  • Re-architect our enrichment platform from synchronous pull to event-driven push without sacrificing consistency.

  • Help stand up a new Tier-1 service at 99.95% from day one.

  • Review designs and code from Partner teams building into our platform.

A day in the life

You'll spend your day designing and building backend services, writing and reviewing code, and shepherding changes through launch and into production. You'll collaborate with product managers, upstream route-planning teams, and the Rabbit app team, and review designs and CRs from Speed program teams building into our platform. As an owner of Tier-1 services, you'll take part in on-call — and when high-severity events strike, you'll be central to diagnosing root causes and mitigating impact on the end-to-end driver experience. Expect deep distributed-systems problems, real autonomy, and impact measured in packages delivered.

About the team

The On-Road Execution (ORE) team, part of the TransporterX org within Amazon's Last Mile Technology, owns the backend that manages the execution state of every driver's itinerary — the interface between route planning, station operations, and the Rabbit driver app. Our systems support delivery across a 10+ billion shipment base spanning 21 countries, powering same-day and ultra-fast programs like Quick Commerce and Premium SSD. We're a GenAI-forward team where AI tooling is part of how every engineer works, and we've turned operational excellence into a discipline — resilience-scenario mapping, fast rollback tooling, and load-shedding SOPs that carry us through record peaks. We're modernizing our architecture toward cleaner boundaries while running Tier-1 services at up to 99.95% uptime.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
