Compliance includes but is not limited to indirect tax routine compliance, gross receipts tax compliance, property tax, business licenses and registrations, and other indirect tax compliance as may be applicable.

  • Tax technology. Assist management with the implementation of the tax technology roadmap, including the tax engine implementation project, ERP/billing integration, product tax code mapping, rate and rule updates, and returns automation. Apply requirements, assist with testing, and help with the coordinated rollout with IT and Finance Systems.

  • Process improvement. Identify and deliver automation, analytics, and data-quality improvements that reduce manual effort and strengthen control, including reconciliation of the sales and use tax liability accounts to the general ledger.

  • Audit defense. Lead the response to state audits and notices, including information requests, defense positions, and resolution.

  • Controls and governance. Maintain effective controls, documentation, and SOX readiness for indirect tax processes; support Internal Audit and external auditors.

  • Business advisory. Provide clear guidance on taxability, contract structuring, and new products and pricing models. Communicate risks, exposures, and recommendations to Tax and Finance leadership.

  • Financial reporting. Support indirect tax provision, reserves, and exposure analysis, including monthly and quarterly close activities.

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of progressive sales and use tax experience in a corporate tax department, public accounting, or a Big 4 / national consulting firm.

  • Demonstrated experience with tax technology: tax determination and compliance platforms (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, Sovos, or similar) and ERP/billing systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Salesforce).

  • Working knowledge of state taxation of software, SaaS, and digital goods, with experience in product taxability analysis and exemption certificate processes.

  • Ability to own complex projects independently and work with cross-functional partners

  • Strong analytical skills and comfort with large data sets, including Excel and reporting or BI tools; ability to translate tax rules into system requirements.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain complex tax issues to non-tax stakeholders and senior leadership.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CMI, CPA, JD, MST, or equivalent advanced credential.

  • Experience in a software, technology, or SaaS environment

  • Experience leading tax technology implementations or ERP migrations.

  • Familiarity with SOX controls for indirect tax and with managing state audits.
