About the Role and Team
Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. As a Senior Software Engineer on CEE, you will architect the systems that decide how much infrastructure Uber needs, where it runs, and what it costs. Our capacity planning platform turns business demand forecasts into resource plans, targets, and quotas across compute, storage, and data infrastructure, on-prem and in the cloud. These plans drive Uber's infrastructure spend and capacity commitments, so engineering teams can ship without over-provisioning and Finance can trust the numbers.
The problems here are messy, the systems are massive, and plans get revised every forecast cycle. Demand is uncertain, cost attribution spans thousands of services and many source systems, and the numbers have to reconcile. You'll lead work that has no clear starting point, make smart decisions with imperfect information, and own outcomes end-to-end: from the first design doc to debugging a production pipeline when a planning deadline is on the line. We are looking for technical leaders who think in systems, hold a high bar for data correctness and reliability, and can bring Engineering, Finance, and infrastructure owners to a shared plan. If you're energized by challenge and motivated by real-world impact, this is where you'll grow.
What You'll Do
-
Design and build long-lasting components of the capacity planning stack, including resource demand-to-supply forecasting models, plan-of-record pipelines, and the services that publish and manage capacity and spend plans, in ways that reduce complexity and make planning faster and more trustworthy for teams across Uber.
-
Solve messy, high-impact problems at the intersection of forecast accuracy, data correctness, and cost, such as reconciling consumption, cost attribution, and Finance forecasts that come from different systems and don't agree, often without a clear starting point or obvious solution.
-
Foresee architectural problems and opportunities in the planning stack, such as source-of-truth migrations, scaling limits, or gaps between plans and enforcement, and work with leadership to address them before they affect a planning cycle or capacity commitment.
-
Lead multi-team projects through every stage: inception, stakeholder alignment, implementation, rollout, and operations. Drive adoption of planning frameworks and tooling across infrastructure and product engineering organizations.
-
Collaborate with Product, Data Science, Finance, and infrastructure platform owners to translate ambiguous business requirements, such as budgets, efficiency targets, and growth scenarios, into production-ready technical roadmaps.
-
Set the bar for operational excellence: own on-call and incident response for planning pipelines and services, drive root-cause fixes, and build the monitoring and data-quality checks that keep plans correct and on time around forecast deadlines.
-
Mentor and guide other engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and project leadership, role-modeling coding and design best practices and raising the bar across CEE.
Basic Qualifications
-
6+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering, data engineering, or a related technical role.
-
Expertise in writing high-quality code in one or more languages (e.g., Go, Java, or Python) to solve strategically important problems that span multiple teams or organizations.
-
Advanced proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and data warehousing, with a demonstrated ability to identify and reconcile gaps between data sources and system architectures.
-
Experience leading cross-team engineering projects through all lifecycle stages: inception, stakeholder engagement, implementation, and operations.
-
Track record of owning production reliability, including leading incident response, running on-call rotations, and driving root-cause fixes.
-
Demonstrated ability to make sound engineering and business trade-offs, considering long-term implications for Uber.
-
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience with forecasting, optimization, or statistical modeling, and with turning models into reliable production systems that drive financial decisions.
-
Domain experience in capacity planning, resource quotas or scheduling, cloud cost management, or cost showback or chargeback systems.
-
Expertise with Big Data frameworks (e.g., Spark, Hive, Flink) and workflow orchestration used to automate complex data pipelines across multiple product areas.
-
Experience building scalable distributed systems or data platforms that operate across a large, heterogeneous infrastructure fleet, on-prem and multi-cloud.
-
Proven ability to get alignment and buy-in for large-scale technical and process changes across Engineering, Finance, and leadership.
-
Experience representing your team to the broader engineering organization, with a track record of translating complex technical concepts for executives and non-technical stakeholders.
