Job Description
We are seeking a Commissioning Technician to support onsite commissioning and functional testing of power distribution and electrical control systems at customer facilities. This position is 100% onsite and will focus heavily on testing PLC- and protection relay-based Auto Throw Over (ATO) schemes. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience working within power distribution environments and a strong understanding of switchgear, PLC controls, protection relays, and electrical troubleshooting. Candidates may come from either an engineering or technician background, provided they have practical field experience commissioning and testing electrical control systems. Day-to-Day Responsibilities On a day-to-day basis, this individual will perform onsite commissioning and functional testing of power distribution control systems. They will load programs into Modicon M340/M580 PLCs and Vijeo HMIs, perform input/output checks, and execute functional testing to verify that equipment operates according to the required sequence of operations. The individual will test Auto Throw Over schemes controlled by PLCs or protection relays and troubleshoot issues such as wiring errors, incorrect signals, or system functionality problems discovered during commissioning. They will also load setting files into protection relays and perform protective-function testing using secondary injection test equipment. The role requires someone comfortable working directly with switchgear, PLCs, protection relays, and electrical power distribution equipment in a customer-site environment. Compensation ranges from $50-60/hr based on years of experience.
Skills and Requirements
- 3+ years of relevant experience in commissioning, electrical controls, power systems, or power distribution.
- Hands-on power distribution experience, including an understanding of electrical distribution systems and their operation.
- Strong understanding of switchgear and how switchgear interfaces with PLCs, protection relays, and control systems.
- Hands-on PLC experience, preferably with Modicon M340 and/or M580 PLCs.
- Experience with protection relays, including loading relay settings and/or performing protective-function testing.
- Commissioning and troubleshooting experience, including I/O checks, functional/sequence-of-operation testing, and diagnosing wiring or control-system issues in the field.
- Experience commissioning or testing Auto Throw Over (ATO) / automatic transfer schemes.
- Experience with Easergy P5/P7 or SEL protection relays, including secondary injection testing.
- Experience with Vijeo HMI software and loading or commissioning HMI applications.
