Full job description

Why join Upscale, Inc.

Upscale, Inc., is building the high-performance infrastructure powering the next generation of artificial intelligence. Backed by over $500M in funding and rapid global adoption, we are scaling systems designed for the world’s most demanding AI workloads.

We focus on first-principles engineering across silicon, systems, and networking—where performance, scale, and execution are critical. Our team is talent-dense and high-performing. We value ownership, technical rigor, and speed, and we offer the opportunity to work on foundational problems with immediate, real-world impact.

If you’re looking to do high-impact work, move fast, and help define the infrastructure behind the future of AI—Upscale is where you can produce meaningful work at the frontier—and operate at a high standard.

Position Overview

We are looking for a senior Platform Diagnostic Engineer to own diagnostics for our hardware platforms, from board bring-up through manufacturing and field support. You will write and maintain diagnostic firmware and software, debug problems that span hardware, BIOS, and the Linux kernel, and validate that our systems are reliable and perform as designed. You will work closely with hardware, firmware, software, and manufacturing teams. You’ll need to be detail-oriented, spot potential issues early, and explain technical findings clearly to stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain platform diagnostics for board bring-up, system validation, manufacturing test, and field failure analysis.

  • Debug and resolve complex issues across hardware, BIOS/UEFI, bootloader, Linux kernel, and drivers.

  • Develop and customize BIOS/UEFI firmware to support platform initialization, hardware enumeration, and diagnostic hooks.

  • Develop and debug Linux kernel modules and device drivers for platform components such as PCIe, I2C/SMBus, SPI, GPIO, memory, and storage.

  • Test and characterize hardware and software components to make sure they meet performance, reliability, and quality targets.

  • Root-cause failures using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, JTAG debuggers) together with schematics and datasheets.

  • Work with hardware, firmware, software, and manufacturing teams to improve test coverage, yield, and debug efficiency.

  • Document test plans, diagnostic procedures, and failure analysis reports, and present findings to stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in diagnostic, embedded, or platform firmware development.

  • Strong proficiency in BIOS/UEFI development and debug, including platform initialization, ACPI, SMBIOS, and boot flow (UEFI/EDK II, AMI Aptio, or coreboot).

  • Strong proficiency with the Linux kernel, including device driver development, kernel debugging (kgdb, ftrace, crash/kdump, dmesg analysis), and building and configuring the kernel.

  • Expert-level C programming. Scripting in Python and/or Bash.

  • Solid electrical engineering background, with a good understanding of circuit design, board-level hardware, and system integration.

  • Hands-on experience with hardware interfaces and protocols such as PCIe, DDR, I2C/SMBus, SPI, UART, and JTAG.

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with a track record of solving difficult cross-domain issues.

  • Excellent communication skills. You can explain technical findings clearly and work well with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with diagnostic frameworks and tools for manufacturing test and RMA/failure analysis.

  • Familiarity with BMC/OpenBMC, IPMI, and Redfish.

  • Experience with server, networking, or AI infrastructure platforms.

  • Experience with x86 and/or ARM platform architectures.

  • Experience bringing up new silicon or boards from first power-on.

Where you fall within that range depends on your experience, skills, and impact—we benchmark against internal levels to keep things fair and consistent.

Equal Opportunity

Upscale, Inc., is building a team that reflects a wide range of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. We’re proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer and consider all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or veteran status.
