Full job description

Tenure-Track: Assistant Professor of Art & Design in Intelligent Systems and Computational Design College of Performance, Visualization, & Fine Arts (Department)

Location College Station, TX

Open Date 10/8/2026

Position ID 193558

Description

The Texas A&M University College of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts (PVFA) invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time, 9-month Assistant Professor of Art & Design in Intelligent Systems and Computational Design position in the Art & Design (ARTD) Section of the Visualization Program . The anticipated start date is August 1, 2027.

The ARTD Section seeks an artist and/or designer whose work advances contemporary creative practice by blending intelligent systems, computational design, and generative methodologies as primary modes of artistic and design inquiry . We are particularly interested in candidates whose creative and scholarly work explores generative systems, machine learning, creative coding, computational creativity, and emerging forms of AI-enabled artistic and design production.

We seek candidates whose work investigates the creative, cultural, aesthetic, and critical possibilities of machine learning, generative AI, algorithmic systems, computational visualization, procedural design, and related computational approaches to art and design.

The Section welcomes research and creative practice across areas including:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Creative Practice

Creative applications of intelligent systems and machine learning, human-AI collaboration, computational creativity, and emerging approaches to artistic and design production.

  • Computational Design

Algorithmic design, creative coding, procedural systems, computational visualization, generative workflows, and computational methods for design innovation.

  • Critical and Experimental Futures

Research and creative work, including publications, that examines the cultural, social, ethical, and aesthetic implications of AI and computational technologies.

Across these areas, we are interested in how computation functions not simply as a tool, but as a medium for artistic inquiry, design research, experimentation, and creative production. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate how intelligent systems, generative methodologies, and computational design function as conceptual, aesthetic, and material frameworks for contemporary artistic and design practice.

Computational and AI-driven practices may result in a wide range of outcomes, including screen-based experiences, physical artifacts, fabricated objects, spatial installations, immersive environments, performances, and hybrid digital-physical works. Physical making and material experimentation are welcomed as potential manifestations of computational practice but are neither required nor privileged over other forms of creative output.

Consistent with the interdisciplinary mission of the College, we value candidates who demonstrate the ability to collaborate across art, design, visualization, computing, engineering, architecture, the humanities, performance, and the performing arts to produce meaningful creative, scholarly, and public-facing work.

The successful candidate will develop and maintain an active, externally recognized program of creative practice and/or research; contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in intelligent systems, computational design, generative creative practice, and contemporary art and design methodologies ; mentor undergraduate and graduate students; develop innovative curriculum; and contribute to academic service.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses aligned with their areas of expertise, which may include artificial intelligence for creative practice, generative design, computational design, creative coding, computational visualization, digital fabrication, digital sculpture, and studio-based creative practice; advise and mentor MFA students; contribute to the continued evolution of graduate studio-based research and creative practice within the Visualization Program; participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary activities; and serve the profession, the program, and the university community.

About the College

The College of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts was formed in 2022 at Texas A&M University, bringing together the Department of Visualization, the Department of Performance Studies, and the Dance Science Program. PVFA is built without departments. Faculty sections and academic programs sit at the college level, which places musicians, composers, actors, directors, choreographers, dancers, painters, cinematographers, technical artists, level designers, spatial audio engineers, tools programmers, ethnomusicologists, art historians, UI/UX designers, and virtual set designers in one structure rather than in separate units. The College places a heavy emphasis on collaboration and interdisciplinary work in both scholarly and creative research.

The College offers the BS, MS, and MFA in Visualization, a PhD in Visual Computing and Interactive Media, and degree programs in music, dance, and theatre. It operates at the main campus in Bryan-College Station and as part of Texas A&M – Fort Worth, with facilities equipped for work at the intersection of the arts and emerging technology. Applicants should consult the college's website (https://pvfa.tamu.edu/) to review our academic and research programs.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a terminal degree (MFA, MDes , PhD, or equivalent) in Computational Design, Digital Media, Media Arts, Creative Technologies, Human-Computer Interaction, or a closely related field. Candidates who are ABD will be considered, provided they demonstrate clear progress toward completion.

Candidates must demonstrate an active creative and/or scholarly practice in computational design, intelligent systems, generative methodologies, creative coding, computational visualization, artificial intelligence, or related approaches to contemporary art and design . We seek evidence of creative, scholarly, and/or professional accomplishment appropriate to career stage and a demonstrated capacity to contribute to undergraduate and graduate education.

Preference will be given to applicants with:

  • A record of exhibitions, publications, presentations, creative works, funded projects, or other forms of disciplinary dissemination.

  • Experience teaching artificial intelligence, computational design, creative coding, generative design, visualization, or related subjects at the university level.

  • Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration across art, design, computing, engineering, architecture, performance, or related fields.

  • Engagement with critical, theoretical, ethical, cultural, or aesthetic questions surrounding artificial intelligence and computational technologies.

  • Experience developing innovative approaches to computational making, generative systems, computational visualization, AI-enabled creative practice, or hybrid digital-physical production.

  • Demonstrated potential to establish regional, national, or international recognition through creative and/or scholarly work.

Application Instructions

Applicants must submit the following materials through Interfolio : apply.interfolio.com/195034

  • Cover letter

  • Curriculum vitae (embed links to your work/student work you mentor)

  • Portfolio of creative work (link to a website preferred)

  • Personal Statement: Your statement should include your philosophy and plans for research, teaching, and service as applicable.

  • Names and contact information of five professional references

Review of applications will begin 30 days after posting and will continue until the position is filled.
