Description

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Leidos seeks an IT Solutions Architect for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Summit Advanced Tooling, Lakehouse, and Artificial Intelligence Services (ATLAS) program, which modernizes VA enterprise data and analytics through secure integration, cloud services, advanced analytics, and AI.

Remote within CONUS, subject to VA security and access requirements; Washington, DC metro candidates preferred for stakeholder collaboration.

Must support Eastern Time business hours and occasional program travel.

Occasional after-hours or weekend support may be needed for critical outages, incidents, or planned maintenance.

Working with VA stakeholders, product owners, enterprise architects, and engineers, this architect translates business needs into secure, scalable cloud and hybrid solutions using the Summit Data Platform and approved enterprise services. This hands-on role leads solution-level design and implementation within standards established by the Cloud Data Architect and VA architecture governance.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Translate VA customer and platform requirements into implementable solution architectures with product owners, analysts, and engineers.

  • Design end-to-end Azure/cloud and hybrid solutions spanning applications, APIs, data integration, security, automation, and platform services.

  • Produce architecture diagrams, technical designs, interface specifications, implementation guidance, and decision records.

  • Evaluate approved patterns and alternatives for functionality, scalability, performance, security, maintainability, and cost.

  • Design data-platform integrations covering ingestion, transformation, storage, analytics, and interoperability.

  • Ensure compliance with the Summit Enterprise Reference Architecture, VA technical standards, cybersecurity, and data governance.

  • Coordinate design reviews and exceptions with the Cloud Data Architect and VA architecture governance stakeholders.

  • Develop technical estimates, assess dependencies, and advise on solution planning and implementation tradeoffs.

  • Guide software, data, and DevSecOps engineers through design, development, deployment, and operational handoff.

  • Promote reusable platform patterns and automation to reduce manual work and accelerate delivery.

  • Support design reviews, testing, deployment readiness, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.

  • Maintain architecture and implementation documentation.

  • Provide technical escalation support for complex production incidents, integration failures, and service restoration as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or related field and 12+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent experience under Leidos standards.

  • Experience designing and implementing complex enterprise solutions across applications and technical disciplines.

  • Cloud solution architecture experience (Azure preferred), including compute, storage, networking, identity, and integration.

  • Experience integrating systems through APIs, web services, messaging, or comparable technologies.

  • Working knowledge of databases, data pipelines, integration, and cloud analytics platforms.

  • Knowledge of secure architecture, identity/access management, encryption, and cybersecurity principles.

  • Experience producing architecture diagrams, technical designs, and implementation documentation.

  • Ability to assess alternatives against performance, scalability, security, cost, and operational needs.

  • Effective collaboration with customers, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, writing, and technical presentation skills.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain VA Public Trust suitability (Tier 2/Moderate Risk).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Highly preferred: Direct, hands-on VA Summit Data Platform experience, including its architecture, integrations, technologies, and operations; related VA data/analytics or modernization experience also valued.

  • Experience on VA or other federal IT programs and familiarity with federal architecture, security, and compliance.

  • Hands-on Azure data services, Databricks, Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Data Factory, or comparable platforms.

  • Familiarity with Lakehouse architecture, metadata, catalogs, data governance, and interoperability.

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, DevSecOps, and automated cloud provisioning.

  • Familiarity with ServiceNow intake, provisioning, and IT service-management workflows.

  • Knowledge of NIST 800-53, Risk Management Framework (RMF), and Authority to Operate (ATO) processes.

  • Experience with Agile delivery and cross-functional engineering teams.

  • Relevant certification, such as Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert or equivalent.
