Summary
The incumbent in this Supervisory Dietitian position acts as the expert and oversees a complex Clinical Nutrition Service which involves providing both administrative and technical supervision of GS-12 level Dietitians and oversees the work of Clinical Dietitians at the GS-11 level and below. They provide professional and management support to the department while continuously striving to increase patient satisfaction and improve Veteran experiences.
Duties
The major duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Provides Clinical Nutrition Section specific leadership serving as professional and technical advisor to staff and other health care professionals. Has oversight for Human Resources Staffing as well as Employee and Labor relations for the Clinical Nutrition Section. Exercises a full range of supervisory and personnel management authorities and assumes full responsibility in planning, directing, and assessing work of subordinate staff. Establishes a training plan for the Clinical Section that is determined by evidence-based nutrition. Develops and leads Clinical Nutrition Operations. Establishes strategic goals and ensures priorities align with the strategic plan of the Nutrition and Food Services Department, VISN, and National programs. Leads performance improvement efforts within the Clinical Nutrition Section, acting on quality improvement data and plans. Identifies and prioritizes problems, sets long and short-term goals, develops action plans and analyses data to evaluate progress to improve outcomes. Develops and updates policies and procedures and the establishment and oversight of a system for regulatory compliance. Solicits support and/or negotiates with facility managers to influence decision making and garner support to ensure Clinical Nutrition operations are a success. Collaborates closely with the supervisory dietitians to cover the work in all Nutrition and Food Services and execute the activities of the department. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 0730 - 1600 (7:30am - 4:00pm), tour may be adjusted to cover needs of service. Telework: As determined by the agency policy Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Registration: All applicants must hold the RDN credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Note: Applicants who hold the RDN credential have met the education requirement (e.g. bachelor's degree or higher) of CDR, as such this occupation is considered professional and scientific with a positive education requirement and the procedures in Part I, Chapter 4 of this Handbook will be followed when applying Veteran's preference. Exceptions do not apply at this grade level as Non-credentialed Dietitians may only be appointed at the GS-07 or GS-09 grade level and may not be promoted/converted until they obtain their RDN credential. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grandfathering Provision. Employees in VHA in this occupation, under a permanent, appropriate and legal placement on the effective date of the qualification standard, are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade and/or assignment held, including positive education and registration/certification, where applicable. Employees appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, either on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. The following provisions apply to employees who do not meet all the qualification requirements: Employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level or changed to a lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or be newly placed in a supervisory or managerial position. Employees must meet the assignment-specific certification/education requirements to be placed in Dietitian (Advanced Level Practice) or Dietitian (Dietetic Internship Director) assignments. Employees initially grandfathered into this occupation who subsequently obtain additional education and/or registration/certification that meet all the qualification standard's basic or assignment-specific requirements must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation/assignment. Employees retained in this occupation under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of re- entry in the occupation. Grade Determinations: Supervisory Dietitian (Clinical Nutrition), GS-13 1. Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. AND 2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skill in written communication including policy development and standard operating procedures. Skill in strategic planning to develop goals, objectives and action plans. Skill in analyzing data to monitor progress towards improving and sustaining outcomes. Ability to negotiate. Ability to supervise subordinate staff (i.e., plan, organize, delegate, direct, control and review activities and performance). Preferred Experience: At least three years experience supervising and leading a clinical nutrition team. Experience with enteral and parenteral nutrition support.
