Full job description

Description We are looking for an experienced Senior Accountant to join a legal organization in La Jolla, California. This position plays a central role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting reporting needs, and ensuring accounting activities are completed with precision and timeliness. The ideal candidate brings strong general ledger expertise, sound judgment when handling sensitive financial matters, and the ability to work effectively across accounting and administrative teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the monthly close process by preparing journal entries, recording accruals, maintaining prepaid and fixed asset schedules, and completing reconciliations within established deadlines.

  • Oversee general ledger activity by preserving data accuracy, investigating variances, correcting discrepancies, and contributing to the preparation of financial statements and account analysis.

  • Manage trust and client fund accounting, including transaction processing and monthly three-way reconciliations in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory standards.

  • Support both payables and receivables functions by reviewing invoices, processing expense reimbursements, assisting with billing activity, applying cash receipts, and following up on outstanding balances.

  • Reconcile bank, payroll, and credit card accounts on a recurring basis and resolve outstanding items to keep records current and accurate.

  • Prepare financial schedules and ad hoc reports for leadership, external auditors, and tax advisors, while also assisting with forecasting and budget-related analysis.

  • Organize and provide documentation needed for audits, tax preparation, insurance reviews, and other external compliance requests.

  • Help strengthen accounting operations by following internal controls, identifying workflow improvements, and supporting automation where appropriate.

  • Partner with accounting staff, attorneys, and administrative personnel to answer financial questions and offer guidance to less experienced team members as needed. Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related discipline.

  • At least 3 years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on responsibility for month-end close activities.

  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting fundamentals.

  • Proficiency with accounting systems and advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines with a high level of accuracy and organization.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to handle confidential information discreetly.

  • Ability to work independently in a remote or minimally supervised environment.

  • Prior experience in a law firm or services setting, including familiarity with trust accounting, legal billing platforms, or audit support, is preferred.
