Union College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering (tenure-track), beginning September 1, 2027. Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2026 and continue until the position is filled.

Position description:

Excellent candidates in all areas of Computer Engineering will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with backgrounds or research interests in hardware accelerator design, system-on-chip design, and AI-enabled embedded systems. A Ph.D. in Computer Engineering or a closely related field is required. We welcome applications from candidates traditionally underrepresented in Computer Engineering. Candidates close to completing their doctoral thesis at the start of employment are also welcome to apply.

The successful candidate will have a deep commitment to undergraduate education while establishing and maintaining a high quality research program that involves undergraduate students. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in microcontrollers, logic design, digital design, technical electives in the candidate’s areas of expertise, and supervision of senior capstone projects. The teaching load is the equivalent of five courses in the first year, and six courses per year thereafter, with lab sections counting as half course each, and senior capstone supervision counting as a quarter course per student.

Applicants with a strong background in collaborative undergraduate teaching and/or with interdisciplinary research interests that intersect with arts and humanities are strongly encouraged to apply. Union College recognizes the rich possibilities of interdisciplinary studies by offering many opportunities for both faculty and students to engage with multiple disciplines - and each other - in collaborative classroom settings and research initiatives. We are especially interested in applicants who can make connections with our existing interdisciplinary programs or other departments (https://www.union.edu/academic/majors-minors) , such as data analytics, computer science, music technology, neuroscience, visual arts, digital media or others.

About the Electrical, Computer, & Biomedical Engineering Department:

The Electrical, Computer, & Biomedical Engineering (ECBE) Department offers a distinct undergraduate experience by combining a flexible liberal arts curriculum with rigorous, ABET-accredited engineering coursework. Defining features of our programs include small classes and labs taught directly by faculty, hands-on projects appearing throughout the curriculum, exceptional study abroad options, and close collaboration between students and faculty on high-impact research projects. The ECBE Department traces its origins to 1902, when Charles Proteus Steinmetz established the Department of Electrical Engineering. Computer Engineering was added in 1997, and the department assumed its present form in 2017 through a merger with the Biomedical Engineering program. Currently, 15 full-time faculty members serve a student body of roughly 200.

Application instructions:

Please submit all application materials as pdf files. Only the materials listed below will be considered. We ask that candidates submit as a single pdf file the following:

  • Cover letter

  • Curriculum vitae

  • Separate statements of teaching and research interests that, where applicable, include a description of experiences working with diverse learning communities

  • Copies of up to two peer-reviewed publications or other evidence of scholarship, and

  • List of required instrumentation and equipment.

Please send questions and other inquiries to Professor Chandra Pappu at [email protected] . Applicants invited to the first round of interviews will receive a request for the contact information for three professional references who can speak to their abilities in research and/or teaching in the field of computer engineering.
