Full job description

Purpose:

The Senior Environmental Scientist provides senior-level technical and regulatory leadership for environmental science, investigation, remediation, and compliance programs supporting federal and commercial clients throughout Alaska. This position guides environmental strategy, technical planning, field execution, and documentation while ensuring the quality, accuracy, and defensibility of project deliverables.

The Senior Environmental Scientist manages technical and regulatory risk, provides guidance to multidisciplinary project teams, and works closely with clients, regulators, and other stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes. This position also supports business development through technical scoping, proposal development, cost and schedule development, and client engagement while mentoring and developing junior and mid-level technical staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide senior-level technical and regulatory leadership for environmental investigation, remediation, monitoring, compliance, and related projects.

  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level staff, supporting professional development and consistent application of technical and quality standards.

  • Conduct senior-level technical reviews of work plans, reports, and other environmental documents prior to client or regulatory submittal.

  • Lead the development and maintenance of project procedures, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), document preparation and production processes, and field execution protocols.

  • Provide technical oversight and guidance in the development of work plans for sampling, analyzing, and reporting concentrations of contaminants and geochemical indicators in environmental media, including air, groundwater, surface water, marine environments, sediment, and soil.

  • Lead technical tasks associated with the development of work plans, reports, and other environmental project deliverables.

  • Provide technical guidance and oversight for environmental investigations, spill response, remediation, sampling, monitoring, and related field activities.

  • Lead the development, production, review, and delivery of technical documents in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements, quality standards, and established project schedules.

  • Manage technical and regulatory risk to support defensible project deliverables, regulatory certainty, and alignment with client objectives, schedules, and budgets.

  • Support project managers in project planning and execution, including internal team coordination, technical decision-making, and resolution of complex technical issues.

  • Ensure project activities are performed in accordance with corporate, contractual, and project-specific health and safety requirements.

  • Assist in preparing project progress documentation, including weekly and monthly status reports and other required project updates.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and subject matter experts to plan and execute environmental projects for federal and commercial clients.

  • Serve as a senior technical liaison with federal, state, local, and Tribal agencies to support effective communication, regulatory coordination, and successful project outcomes.

  • Communicate complex technical and regulatory information clearly and effectively to clients, regulators, project teams, and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Support business development efforts through opportunity identification, proposal strategy, technical scoping, client engagement, and pursuit of environmental science, compliance, and remediation opportunities.

  • Lead and support proposal development efforts, including preparation of technical approaches, scopes of work, cost estimates, and project schedules.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, regulatory agencies, project partners, and other stakeholders.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science, Physical Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.

  • Master’s degree in Biological Science, Physical Science, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred.

Required Qualifications:

  • Twenty (20)+ years of experience performing environmental-related work on projects in government and commercial environments.

  • Demonstrated experience providing senior-level technical oversight for environmental investigations, remediation, monitoring, compliance, spill response, or related environmental programs.

  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and the ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements to complex environmental projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage technical and regulatory risk and develop defensible environmental strategies and deliverables.

  • Experience developing and conducting senior-level reviews of work plans, technical reports, and other environmental documentation.

  • Experience providing technical oversight of environmental field activities, including sampling, investigation, monitoring, and remediation efforts.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with federal, state, local, and Tribal agencies.

  • Experience supporting project managers and multidisciplinary teams in the execution of complex environmental projects.

  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and providing technical guidance to junior and mid-level environmental professionals.

  • Experience supporting business development activities, including proposal development, technical scoping, cost estimating, schedule development, and client engagement.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly convey complex technical and regulatory information to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or ability to complete required training within six months of hire.
