Full job description

Purpose:

The Senior Geologist provides senior-level technical leadership for environmental investigation, remediation, and monitoring projects. This position leads technical planning, field execution, data evaluation, and reporting efforts while ensuring project activities comply with applicable environmental regulations, client requirements, quality standards, and project schedules.

The Senior Geologist works closely with project managers, clients, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary technical teams to successfully execute environmental projects. This position also provides field leadership and mentorship to technical staff, supporting the development of team capabilities and consistent delivery of high-quality technical work.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead technical activities associated with environmental investigation, remediation, monitoring, and related projects.

  • Lead the development of work plans, technical reports, and other environmental project documentation for federal, state, and commercial clients.

  • Plan, supervise, and execute environmental investigations, remediation activities, monitoring programs, sampling efforts, and other field activities.

  • Lead the development, production, review, and delivery of technical documents in accordance with applicable quality standards, regulatory requirements, and established project schedules.

  • Provide senior-level technical review and guidance to ensure the accuracy, quality, and completeness of project deliverables.

  • Support project managers with technical planning, project execution, scheduling, resource coordination, and other project management activities.

  • Ensure project and field activities are performed in accordance with corporate, contractual, and project-specific health and safety requirements.

  • Prepare project progress documentation, including weekly and monthly status reports and other required project updates.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with clients, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and other stakeholders during project planning and field activities.

  • Apply knowledge of applicable state and federal environmental regulations to project planning, execution, reporting, and decision-making.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and subject matter experts to develop effective technical solutions and achieve project objectives.

  • Lead and manage technical teams during field activities, providing direction and oversight to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.

  • Mentor and develop technical staff in both office and field environments through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and hands-on support.

  • Exercise sound professional judgment, tact, discretion, and initiative when addressing technical and project-related challenges.

  • Manage multiple technical priorities and deadlines while maintaining high standards for quality and attention to detail.

  • Travel to local and out-of-state project sites, conferences, meetings, and other business-related events as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Twenty (20)+ years of experience performing scientific and technical work on environmental projects.

  • In-depth knowledge of applicable state and federal environmental laws, regulations, standards, and guidance.

  • Experience planning, supervising, and executing environmental investigations, remediation activities, monitoring programs, and related field efforts.

  • Experience developing, reviewing, and delivering technical work plans, reports, and other environmental project documentation.

  • Experience working with federal clients and supporting projects subject to federal environmental requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and provide oversight of environmental field activities.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and subject matter experts in a project environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level staff.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with clients, regulators, team members, and other stakeholders.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, discretion, and initiative.

  • Ability to remain focused and effective in a dynamic environment with competing priorities and deadlines.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.

  • Ability to travel to local and out-of-state project sites, conferences, and meetings as required.

  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or ability to complete required training within six months of hire.

  • Experience with environmental projects in Alaska and working under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) programs is preferred.
