Full job description

Full-time, in person in San Francisco. First engineering hire, working directly with both founders (both technical) and with our customers. About Durate Durate is building self-running coordination systems for hospitals, starting with physician scheduling. To put it simply, we’re on a mission to put physicians first. We started Durate because we wanted to work on the highest leverage problem physicians face today: the complexity of how they work, when they work, and what they do. Everything we do stems from the belief that by improving the lives of physicians, we improve care for the millions of patients they treat. Thousands of providers use Durate daily across some of the top hospital systems in the country, and we’re growing fast. We’re bringing on someone who will own a big part of the product as we expand in existing customers and bring on new ones. The role Own a customer workflow that’s in real, repeated use in production today, and make it better. This is a full-stack role where you own the product decisions and will have a relationship with customers, not just the code. What you build directly affects thousands of physicians. You’ll work inside an existing application and connect the pieces (interfaces, backend APIs, state, integrations) into workflows that run end to end. You’ll put yourself in the shoes of a physician or hospital administrator, follow what they do, and then trace that down from the browser to the database. You’ll talk to customers directly, watch how they actually work, push back on assumptions, prototype, and constantly look to improve after releasing a first version. What you’ll own:

  • Work with founders and customers to turn ambiguous requests into measurable improvements to our system
  • Design systems that cut down the errors administrators can run into, now and in the future
  • Test, simplify, then simplify a couple more times. That goes for workflows we’ve built and ones we haven’t yet
  • Turn the one-off requests customers make into simple, dynamic adjustments every hospital benefits from

Problems you might tackle:

  • A new customer comes with asks we’ve never seen. Fit them into our dynamic system without hard-coding a special case.
  • Cut the number of clicks from intent to completion on our key workflows.
  • Improve how robust our system is by making sure processes can’t fail silently.

What we’re looking for

  • You’re extremely good at designing reliable, robust systems (we’re looking for great systems-thinkers)
  • You have a strong design sense and can simplify complex processes into something that actually gets used in production and is understandable by anyone
  • You’ve shipped software people depended on and owned it after launch
  • You use AI coding tools and can explain, verify, and test what they produce
  • Years don’t matter to us. What you’ve built and kept running does
  • We love our customers and we hope you’re interested in healthcare too
  • Early-stage or founding engineer experience is a plus

Our stack Python, JavaScript, React, MongoDB How we work We work in person in San Francisco, talk to customers constantly, and are always looking to improve. We use AI dev tools where they help and we stay responsible for what ships. When something has to give, scope gives before correctness or customer trust does. We test the cases that matter and the ways things fail, watch what happens after release, and raise risks early. You’ll have room to make decisions, and they’ll matter. Most of all, we have a lot of fun with the work we do and always remember who we’re building for. Apply Send a short note with examples of work you’ve shipped and how it evolved. Walk us through a customer problem you owned: what you built, what you got right (or wrong), and what you changed after. Links, screenshots or a short walkthrough are welcome.
