Full job description
Description We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead the accounting function for a construction-focused organization in Charlotte, North Carolina. This role will oversee financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and internal controls while providing leadership to the accounting team and supporting sound business decisions across the company. The Controller will work closely with executives, operations leaders, and Payroll/HR to deliver accurate financial insight, strengthen processes, and support compensation administration tied to bonuses, commissions, and incentive plans.
Responsibilities:

Lead day-to-day accounting activities and ensure financial records are maintained accurately, completely, and on schedule.

Produce monthly financial statements and management reports that give leadership and external stakeholders clear visibility into business performance.

Establish and enhance accounting policies, operating procedures, and internal control measures to safeguard assets and promote consistency.

Manage month-end close activities, including general ledger oversight, reconciliations, and review of reporting accuracy.

Partner with leadership and department managers to build annual budgets, evaluate results against plan, and recommend corrective actions when needed.

Prepare cash flow projections, executive dashboards, and performance analyses covering revenue, profitability, receivables, cash position, and budget-to-actual trends.

Review job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and work-in-progress reporting to support proper revenue recognition and accurate project financials.

Oversee accounts receivable and collection efforts, working with project teams to resolve billing issues and improve the timing of cash receipts.

Coordinate with external tax advisors and auditors to support filings, audits, and compliance with applicable financial and tax regulations.

Collaborate with Payroll/HR to verify bonus, commission, and incentive compensation calculations and support related process improvements or system-related changes as needed. Requirements • 7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including leadership responsibility within a controller or senior accounting capacity.

Background in the construction or contractor industry with strong knowledge of project-based accounting practices.

Hands-on experience with work-in-progress reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and job cost analysis.

Strong command of general ledger management, month-end close, and financial statement preparation.

Demonstrated ability to develop budgets, forecasts, cash flow reporting, and executive-level financial analysis.

Familiarity with accounts receivable management, collections oversight, and billing review in a project-driven environment.

Knowledge of internal controls, regulatory compliance, and coordination with external auditors and tax professionals.

Experience using NetSuite or a comparable ERP system to manage accounting operations and reporting.
