Full job description
Overview
This role will be part of our Monetization Inventory Design team, focused on shaping current and future monetization experiences across Microsoft Copilot, Bing (including AI Overviews and AI Mode), MSN, gaming, and other key consumer surfaces. You will work across today's advertising experiences and explore entirely new models that use AI to redefine how people interact with technology and how those experiences create value for consumers and businesses. Your work will sit at the center of a rapidly changing advertising industry.
As a Senior Product Designer , you will help define a new model for how product design happens in the AI era. This is not a traditional design role with AI added to the workflow. We are looking for someone who fundamentally rethinks the workflow itself.
You are a designer, builder, and systems thinker who moves fluidly across customer problems, product strategy, interaction design, code, models, data, and AI systems. Rather than relying on traditional design tools to manually produce every artifact, you build intelligent systems that help generate, critique, evaluate, and evolve the work.
You build your own tools and orchestrate teams of specialized AI agents around complex problems, defining their roles, context, tools, handoffs, memory, evaluation criteria, and feedback loops. You explore recursive systems that learn from research, experimentation, product signals, and human feedback and continuously improve their outputs.
Your goal is not simply to use AI to work faster. Your goal is to build systems that increase what a designer is capable of doing.
This changes where you spend your time. You automate or delegate repeatable production, coordination, and evaluation work so you can focus on the problems where human judgment matters most: understanding customers, defining strategy, establishing taste and direction, building partnerships, and deciding what should exist in the first place.
Exceptional design judgment remains essential. AI can produce enormous amounts of work; your value is knowing what deserves to exist and what good looks like. You bring the interaction craft, visual taste, customer empathy, and product intuition necessary to recognize quality and encode those standards into the systems you create.
You are not pushing pixels. You are creating and pushing systems.
Most importantly, you are excited to help invent what product design becomes when designers no longer need to manually produce every part of the experience.
By applying to this U.S. Mountain View, CA position, you are required to be local to the San Francisco Bay Area and work in-office four days per week. Redmond, WA candidates are required to be local to the greater Seattle metropolitan area and work in-office four days per week.
Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. This expectation is subject to local law and may vary by jurisdiction.
Responsibilities
-
Own and ship high-quality AI-powered consumer experiences from early exploration through implementation, maintaining a high bar for interaction quality, visual craft, accessibility, trust, and customer impact.
-
Design systems that design. Create AI-powered workflows that generate, critique, evaluate, refine, and operationalize design work at scale.
-
Build and orchestrate teams of AI agents with specialized roles, tools, context, memory, and responsibilities. Design how they delegate work, share context, evaluate outputs, incorporate feedback, and escalate decisions to people.
-
Develop recursive and learning design systems that use research, experimentation, product signals, evaluation, and human feedback to continuously improve their outputs.
-
Build custom tools, prototypes, automations, and agentic workflows using code, models, APIs, structured data, and emerging AI technologies.
-
Encode design principles, customer knowledge, interaction patterns, brand standards, and quality criteria into reusable systems that allow solid design decisions to scale.
-
Design intelligent product behaviors that give people appropriate understanding and control, including intent, delegation, system status, uncertainty, correction, recovery, and human oversight.
-
Define what good looks like for AI-driven experiences and build evaluation mechanisms that assess quality, identify failure modes, and improve the system.
-
Partner deeply with Product, Engineering, Data Science, Research, Design, and business teams to connect customer needs with technical capabilities and influence underlying system requirements.
-
Identify repeated human effort that can become scalable intelligence through automation, delegation, orchestration, or continuous learning.
-
Share tools, agents, patterns, and learnings so individual experimentation becomes reusable organizational capability.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
-
Master's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 4+ years experience working in product or service design
-
OR Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 5+ years experience working in product or service design
-
OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience working in product or service design or using design thinking to solve problems).
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Master's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 6+ years experience working in product or service design
-
OR Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 8+ years experience working in product or service design
-
OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience working in product or service design or using design thinking to solve problems).
-
A portfolio or body of work demonstrating exceptional product, interaction, and visual design judgment, along with experience shipping high-quality digital products.
-
Demonstrated hands-on experience building and orchestrating AI-powered workflows or agentic systems, including agents that use tools, context, delegation, evaluation, and feedback to accomplish complex work.
-
Evidence of personally building working AI-driven systems, tools, or experiences that materially changed how a problem was explored, designed, or solved. Conceptual familiarity with AI alone is insufficient for this role.
-
Experience building multi-agent, recursive, or self-improving systems that evaluate outputs, incorporate feedback, and iteratively improve subsequent work.
-
Solid understanding of LLMs and generative AI, including prompting, context engineering, model and tool orchestration, structured outputs, retrieval, and evaluation.
-
Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, or similar technologies, with the ability to independently create and modify functional prototypes and tools.
-
Experience working with APIs, structured data, models, tools, and external services to construct end-to-end AI experiences.
-
Experience creating AI-powered design tooling, automation, or systems that expand the capabilities of other designers.
-
Solid understanding of evaluation for probabilistic systems, including defining quality criteria, identifying failure modes, and designing feedback and recovery mechanisms.
-
Exceptional interaction and visual design craft paired with the ability to encode taste and quality into principles, constraints, prompts, evaluations, tools, and systems that people or agents can apply.
-
Demonstrated ability to establish direction in ambiguous technical spaces and transform emerging technology into understandable, useful, and differentiated customer experiences.
-
Solid product judgment and the ability to connect customer needs, technology, research, business context, and measurable outcomes.
-
Ability to explain complex AI systems clearly and build alignment across Product, Engineering, Research, Data Science, Design, and business leadership.
