Full job description

Our Strategy & Consulting group works with the senior leaders of large organizations to help them grow, run better and spend less. We bring deep knowledge of their industries, our own tools and methods, and strong skills in technology, data and AI. Our goal is to help clients make lasting changes across their whole organization, not just fix one part of it.

About You:You have worked on Medicaid from more than one side. You have worked inside a state agency, run the finances of a health plan or provider group, and managed outside vendors to make sure they delivered. When a state Medicaid director describes a problem, you have probably faced something like it yourself. You want to apply that experience to reimagine the future of Medicaid—challenging traditional approaches and using advanced technologies, data and AI to transform how states buy, build and run their programs. You are comfortable operating differently, testing bold ideas and helping clients move from incremental improvements to lasting change. Here you will work with talented colleagues and have access to a wide range of skills and partner companies.

The Work:State Medicaid programs are under heavy pressure. The federal government is asking states to fight fraud and improper payments, put new work rules in place for some members, change how they fund their programs and improve rural health care, all at the same time. Most states are trying to do this with old computer systems and small teams. Our Public Health practice is responding by thinking differently about what Medicaid can become—combining deep program expertise with advanced technologies, data and AI to redesign operations, improve outcomes and create more sustainable programs. This includes new commercial models, such as contracts where we get paid based on the results we deliver.

In this role, you will:- Build trusted relationships with state Medicaid directors and other health agency leaders, and help us win work with new states- Help clients envision a different future for Medicaid and translate bold ideas into practical transformation agendas- Shape and sell projects that apply advanced technologies, data and AI to update Medicaid systems, improve oversight of the health plans states contract with, and reduce fraud and wasted spending- Design contracts that tie our pay to real results for the state, drawing on your experience with cost and quality targets- Turn new federal rules into clear, practical plans that states can follow- Advise states on replacing or updating their computer systems, holding vendors to their commitments and doing the work in the right order- Represent us with federal officials, state lawmakers and industry groups, and share ideas that influence how the field thinks

We invest heavily in training and development so you can keep growing your career. We believe teams do better than individuals and that different points of view lead to better answers. Here you will learn, try new things and lead.

People in Strategy & Consulting help clients grow and find new opportunities. As they advance, they take on roles that bring in new business. Our Management Consulting teams help clients change how work gets done by bringing together strategy, technology and people.

Our Public Service group works with state and local governments, nonprofits and schools. This role is part of our Public Health practice, which serves state Medicaid agencies, health and human services departments and public health programs. In this role, you will lead large changes in how public programs are designed, staffed and run, so they deliver better results for the people they serve. You will focus on people, processes, funding and systems across Medicaid and other government health programs.

You must be able to travel up to 75% of the time. For now, business travel is limited to trips that are essential for client work or sales.

What You Need:- At least 12 years of experience working on Medicaid or other government-funded health care, whether in state government, health plans, hospitals and provider groups, or consulting- At least 12 years of experience working in or with public programs- At least 7 years of experience leading large teams or programs that span several departments, including responsibility for a budget or for financial results- At least 7 years of experience leading large projects or operations on your own, such as systems that decide who qualifies for benefits, health insurance marketplaces, or Medicaid health plan programs

It’s a Plus If You Have:- A master’s degree in public policy, public health or a similar field

  • Experience managing large vendor contracts and making sure vendors meet deadlines, deliver what they promised and stay on budget- Held a senior leadership job in a state Medicaid or health and human services agency- Run the finances of a Medicaid health plan or provider network and delivered clear results in savings, profit or quality- Served as a state’s main contact with the federal Medicaid agency and won federal approvals or funding- Started new programs or organizations from scratch and brought fresh ideas to them- A background in software or technology that lets you work easily with technical teams- Experience speaking in public, teaching, writing, or presenting at regional and national events
