Summary:

The Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) is responsible for maintaining all components of the Cancer Registry and associated data systems in compliance with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and accreditation standards. This role abstracts, codes, analyzes, and reports cancer data using CRStar and other registry tools. The ODS ensures accurate and timely data submission to regulatory agencies, including the New York State Cancer Registry (NYSCR), and supports long-term follow-up, data quality, and reporting initiatives.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION

  • Associate Degree in Health Information Technology with RHIT credentials or a Bachelor Degree in Health Information Administration, with RHIA credentials is preferred

  • Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credentials required; Maintains credentials by meeting NCRA’s continuing education requirements

EXPERIENCE

  • Six (6) – twelve (12) months experience is preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-O-3 coding, AJCC staging, SEER Summary Staging and STORE data standards

  • Proficiency with cancer registry software (CRStar preferred)

  • Ability to interpret complex medical records accurately

  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Fully Remote

  • Prolonged computer use and data entry

ENVIRONMENT

  • Normal heat, light space, and safe working environment; typical of most office jobs
