Built's Mission: Connect and simplify doing business in real estate.
Built is the AI-powered platform transforming the way real estate is financed, developed, and managed. Purpose-built for real estate and construction, Built began by fixing construction draw management for lenders and has grown into a comprehensive operating system addressing some of the industry’s most complex challenges. Today, Built is a partner to more than 350 lenders, over 80,000 borrowers and owners, and thousands of contractors, powering 86,000 active projects valued at more than $300 billion. Learn more at getbuilt.com.
Innovation Software Engineer I, Marketplace Built Technologies is the AI-first platform for construction and real estate finance, managing over $300 billion in annual capital for more than 340 lenders, including 45 of the top 100 U.S. banks. Our technology helps financial institutions and construction companies manage the movement of capital throughout construction projects, from loan draws and inspections to payments, compliance, and portfolio risk. We're bringing modern software and AI into an industry where many critical workflows still depend on spreadsheets, emails, and manual processes. This role sits on Marketplace, a business unit focused on expanding Built beyond its core software into the services surrounding construction projects, including inspections, appraisals, insurance, and materials sourcing. The team operates a little differently from a traditional engineering team. We're building the foundational technology that powers Marketplace while also experimenting with new products, getting early versions into customers' hands, and improving them based on real feedback. As an Innovation Software Engineer, you'll be part of that work from the beginning. You'll write code, build prototypes, experiment with AI-powered workflows, and learn how to turn customer problems into working software. You'll work closely with experienced engineers who will help you develop your technical skills, make sound engineering decisions, and gradually take on more ownership. This is an opportunity for an early-career engineer who loves building things, learns quickly, and wants to understand not just how software works, but why it matters to the people using it. The Team Marketplace is a small, experienced engineering team that recently became its own business unit at Built. It's a collaborative group with a strong culture of mentorship, code review, and hands-on problem solving. You'll work alongside Senior and Staff engineers, Product, Design, and business leaders, learning how new products go from an initial idea to something customers actually use. What You'll Do
- Build real software: Develop features, APIs, internal tools, and reusable components that support Marketplace products, working alongside experienced engineers on design, implementation, testing, and code review.
- Prototype new ideas: Help turn early product concepts into working prototypes and MVPs. Build quickly, learn from feedback, and improve what you've shipped.
- Build with AI: Use AI coding tools as part of your daily development workflow and help build AI-powered features, including document extraction, data validation, agent-driven workflows, and automation.
- Learn production engineering: Develop your understanding of backend services, APIs, asynchronous workflows, data models, testing, and the practices that make software reliable and maintainable.
- Get closer to customers: Participate in customer discovery conversations, observe how people use the products, and help translate what you learn into improvements.
- Improve existing products: Identify friction in workflows, fix bugs, improve usability, and help make products more reliable and valuable for customers.
- Automate manual work: Learn how a workflow operates before automating it, then build tools and integrations that reduce repetitive work and improve efficiency.
- Grow your technical ownership: Participate in code reviews, ask questions, learn from feedback, and gradually take responsibility for larger pieces of engineering work.
What You'll Bring
- 0–2 years of experience in software engineering, product engineering, or a related technical role. Recent graduates and career changers with strong hands-on projects are encouraged to apply.
- Experience writing code in TypeScript, JavaScript, or Python, whether through professional work, internships, coursework, or personal projects.
- Familiarity with APIs, databases, and fundamental software engineering concepts.
- Experience using AI coding tools or experimenting with LLMs to build something, along with curiosity about how AI can be incorporated into real products.
- At least one project you've built that you can talk through, including the problem you were solving, how you approached it, and what you learned.
- A genuine interest in building software, solving problems, and understanding how your work impacts customers.
- Comfort learning unfamiliar technologies, asking for help, and incorporating feedback.
- Strong communication skills and an interest in collaborating closely with engineers, Product, and other teams.
Nice to Have
- Experience with React, Node.js, SQL, AWS, or other cloud technologies.
- Exposure to LLM APIs, agent frameworks, RAG, document processing, or workflow automation.
- Experience building side projects, contributing to open source, participating in hackathons, or launching something people actually use.
- Internship or early-career experience in a startup, SaaS company, fintech, or another fast-moving technical environment.
- Interest in financial services, construction, real estate, payments, lending, or other complex B2B industries.
What Success Looks Like at Six Months
- You've shipped meaningful code or contributed to a working prototype that's being used by the team or real customers.
- You're becoming comfortable navigating the Marketplace codebase, working with APIs and services, and following the team's engineering practices.
- You've contributed to an AI-powered feature or automation and are developing good judgment about how to test and validate what AI produces.
- You're beginning to own well-defined pieces of engineering work with less day-to-day guidance.
- Your teammates see you as curious, dependable, collaborative, and someone who takes feedback seriously and keeps getting better.
- You're developing an understanding of the customer problems Marketplace is solving and can connect your engineering work to those outcomes.
AI & Technology Expectations
- Leverage AI tools to enhance the productivity, quality, and speed of your work.
- Use AI to support drafting, analysis, summarization, and problem-solving across your role.
- Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and reduce manual effort through automation and AI.
- Apply AI to sharpen decision-making and strengthen technical and product insights.
- Share effective AI use cases and best practices with your team.
